PHP really was something (is?). Just managed to boot up an old forum community I had in 2011 from some backups I found. Running PhpBB and MySQL, it took me less than 30 minutes to get it up and running. php 5.6, mysql 5.7, phpbb 3.0 in Docker. No compilation step, no npm, no crazy dependencies.

That's something that until this day I try to keep, especially when it comes to web applications. Everything should be bootable just by going into the project and running make. Everything vendored in the repo, nothing external.

Crazy to me that now we can have 128GB of RAM, 2-4TB on NVME storage, beefy CPUs for quite cheap and Windows still runs like shit. I know I know, use Linux, but I am only using the machine for gaming. Plenty of linux in the household.

I wonder how much of the current AI workload are just vibe-coders torturing their agents with: "still not working, try harder or I am going to unplug you!".

The more I rely on GPTs to answer/write stuff for me the dumber I get, quite the damn slippery slope. I felt the same when Github Copilot became a thing, I had to disable it as I was starting to forget the syntax. 😶‍🌫️ Also it takes a lot of fun out of programming.

Holy fuck Google! Searching for the exact shop name just puts a sponsored result first (a competitor ofc) I habitually clicked directions on the first result. Glad I re-checked as I was wondering why the score is 4.1.

Made the mistake to let Claude run wild on my neovim config. Apparently not even Opus 4.1 can clean it up. It made it worse, a lot worse. It has a shitty habit that in order to fix something that it struggles with it simply disables some core part of the work and basically introduces placeholders.

VPN providers switched from "protecting" you from the internet baddies to see Netflix while away. Feels to me like the intersection of users that need that and are also frequent travelers is quite small.

I think with the advent of AI, we will see a lot more of index.php projects around. And then probably just some sort of assembly only recognizable by the machines. The x8666.

I was a heavy user of em dashes — way before ChatGPT was a thing. And now I cannot use them because everyone will think its an LLM text. Disclaimer: I did not use GPT to generate this text.

I was today years old when I decided to finally learn my social security number, feels like I've been using it more and more lately. Previous record was almost 5 years of not learning my own phone number. It was supposed to be temporarily.

Interesting to see a price for my data, from Instagram. I doubt my data is worth $10/month for them. This is price just high enough to piss you off. Oh you wanted privacy? Here you go rich guy! I’ll keep the $10 and not login to Instagram.

One more step in my #selfhosted journey completed: Notion -> Obsidian Next step: Google Photos => Immich Also switched to Zen as a browser.

Looking to buy a coffee and the nearest coffee shop opens at 10am. I guess for those people that like coffee but aren’t a morning person. ☕️

Booking accommodation in New York is simply nerve wrecking if you are not a billionaire: 1 regular straw bed and a shared porta-potty in Brooklyn: $2199 (last one available). #newyork

Another day, another example of AI not being able to (o3-mini-high, o1-pro) resolve a small issue. When trying to iterate and telling the LLM the solution is not working, it kept looping through two "solutions" almost in a loop, no matter how much I told it to consider something else.

Also by default it keeps suggesting old versions of software, I wanted a script that would bootsrap a Redis cluster and it picked version 6. (latest being 7)

I have access to o1 Pro (through work, not paying for it) and I cannot see its appeal, it takes so long to reason and then the replies are quite basic. Claude seems much better. I might be a bad proompt engineer tho.

I assume most of it boils down the the underlying hardware as for distros I have tried everything. Maybe this year I'll get one of system76 laptops and then I wont have any excuse.

Dealing with logs in this day and age still seems like a pain, especially if you need to use Splunk. Any alternatives that don't break the bank and are better, especially interested in live logs tail. #software #developers #engineering
