Riya Reve is writing

Handwritten notes are by far the quickest and easiest way to draft imo. If only I could read my handwriting.

16 July

Right, I'm going to transfer my current draft to an e-reader and head off to a haunted pub to read it.

Thanks to writing up all my notes on a paper copy last week, I actually managed to make all the edits this week on my draft, so the week wasn't completely wasted from the brain-melting heat. Pen and paper ftw! (also another draft done)

18 June

Synopsis done, phew 😅 Now it's time for the query letter, which will no doubt spawn a thousand drafts.

Yay! Getting some beta feedback for my MG, so I'm working through those suggestions chapter by chapter with another draft. So here's another thread. WIP: 7/33 chapters.

16 June

Managed to find a bit more time to edit today and so I'm now at 25/33 chapters. So close to finishing another draft.

17 June

33/33. Fourth draft done! I've got a few structural tweaks and then hopefully, after a bit of a break, I can go into the polish/jokes revision. Yes, jokes deserve their own draft.

Ah yes, attempting to write but perpetually drawn in by Olivia Rodrigo's dreamy, creepy, devastating new album. It really feels like a beautiful horror-adjacent domestic suspense and I kinda feel like I need a book like this to read?

Alas, the very specific pain of having to cut a joke to improve the pace of a passage...

The quick, light touch run-through I was supposed to do on my novel is fast turning into a third draft. So it’s time for another accountability thread…11/50k

44.5k! I got to the end of the draft. I suspect I can still add a few more words in development, but it's THERE. The skeleton and some flesh. Whoo.

Got to the end at 39.5k! Certainly on the shorter side, but 50k is the upper limit, not the goal, and I've left plenty of room for development. But most importantly, I finally know what this work is about and where the heart is. I love my characters. ❤️

13 Apr

Goal for the week is to finish the second draft and the ultimate goal for the end of the month is to have a shareable draft that I can send to my trusted beta reader. Go go go!!!

Ah, I’ve not sent a query in well over a year! Organically ended up taking a break from submitting and focusing on the writing, which has been heavenly and much-needed after a stressful few months.
