When I was fifteen years old, I heard about "thon" and tried to use it. I even wrote a short story for English class about a person of unknown gender, using "thon" throughout the story. (I had never heard of nonbinary or intersex people at the time.) Now I just gladly use "they."
In 1934, we added a gender-neutral pronoun for a single third person. βThonβ was short for βthat one.β It didnβt catch on.

The Feb 12, 1904 Courier out of Genoa, NV, via the Reno Journal, reminds us of an unusual marriage that occurred in Tuscarora, NV on Sep 28, 1877. Sam Pollard married Marancy Hughes. But, Sam was actually Sarah. The first same-sex marriage in Nevada. t.co/zN9brPqYcj
