To honour Barry Buzan's scholarly legacy in IR and contribution to @lseir.bsky.social, but also to launch the new book "The Big Picture Approach", which engages with Barry's distinctive intellectual project, we are holding a panel debate at LSE on 29 October, 18:30-20:00. In person & online.

FACTCHECK: UK Conservatives double the ‘cost of net-zero’ after spreadsheet blunder The Tory "Right Way" booklet makes an erroneous claim about the cost of cutting emissions, possibly taken from a Jan26 thinktank report, and deffo the most idiotic error I've seen for a while 🧵

In the past, leading economies were expected to enter a global green race that will accelerate the decarbonisation of the global economy. This optimistic view has given way to a more pessimistic outlook, with economic nationalism and geo-economic competition expected to slow the green transition.

I am so shocked and saddened by this news. Raúl Pacheco-Vega was such a generous and kind person, supporting and offering his wisdom to so many people, far and near. This is just awful. Que descanse en paz.

Buen camino, profe Raúl Pacheco Vega. Fuiste y serás siempre el investigador más chido.

...marks not merely a revival of economic protectionism, but a qualitative shift towards tariffs as a tool of geopolitical strategy. Trump, the self-declared "Tariff Man", is clearly a key factor in this story. However, the combination of a deepening US-China rift, ...

... the weaponisation of economic interdependence and the anti-globalisation shift in Western public opinion, create the conditions for trade tariffs to remain high beyond Trump's time in the White House. The key question is how smaller powers can respond to the weaponisation of tariffs.

The return of tariffs to US foreign economic policy isn’t simply a turn to protectionism. It's a weaponisation of trade as geopolitical strategy. @robertfalkner.bsky.social @lseir.bsky.social argues that the impact of tariffs will linger long beyond Donald Trump's presidency @lsebr.bsky.social

If anything, the confluence of geopolitics and sustainability issues in today's world only serves to underline the importance of researching global climate & environmental issues through an international affairs lens.

Over time, as other think tanks took on the green agenda and universities ramped up their policy-oriented research, environmental policy research became a crowded field, eventually diluting the programme's influence.

Over time, the CH environmental programme broadened its agenda to include many other global environmental issues, from ozone depletion and trade/environmental conflicts to deforestation, biosafety, and resource management.

In this paper, I review the history of environmental and climate related research at Chatham House, from the late 1980s till today, while trying to assess its impact. Not only was Chatham House the first international affairs think tank to put climate change permanently on its research agenda...

... it also had lasting influence over UK and EU climate policy in the 1990s, helping to shift it towards greater acceptance of carbon pricing schemes. Michael Grubb's early research stands out in this regard.

It was fun "thinking with and beyond" Barry in this paper, having written with him over the last few years on the normative evolution of international society, the rise of environmental stewardship and the vicissitudes of the market norm in international relations.

This was a brilliant talk by @ndubash.bsky.social - I will be thinking a lot about his conclusions on the implications to re-orienting climate policy around self-determination. Thanks to @robertfalkner.bsky.social for organizing, @gsos-lse.bsky.social for hosting! Podcast recording will be up soon.
