“Capturing Bigfoot” is absolutely about the famous film of Bigfoot. But even more than that it’s about an extraordinary and fascinating family and their community. Just a really riveting human story. 🫈

I'm so excited to listen to this. The PG film is the holy grail of evidence for the existence of Bigfoot and to see it (so I've heard) so thoroughly deconstructed is going to blow up a lot of talking points

Having now finished CAPTURING BIGFOOT, I’m totally stunned by it. Extremely well-made and human film that examines not only the Patterson-Gimlan film, but the characters and motivations behind its creation, promotion, and consumption. A deeply tragic story of family and belief.

Y’all I’m like 15 minutes into the documentary CAPTURING BIGFOOT and I already love this movie so much. There’s been so much fast-film reality TV dreck made about this topic that watching someone approach this story with humanity is genuinely stunning and fascinating.

So on one hand, as a very involved parent it can be hard to boil down this complex personal/academic summary to bullet points. We usually end up writing more, then still going “Oh I forgot to say…” at parent nights. That said, it’s “think about it awhile” hard, not ”I need to involve AI,” hard.

cool, cool

These questions are difficult, but they’re hard because they’re important and need to come from you. Because remember, these forms aren’t just about your kid and what the teacher should know about them, they’re also about the teacher gauging YOU, what you see and value, the kid’s home environment.

there's a burger chain in toronto that sells "california style" burgers, which means that the buns are inverted. not a thing in california. im losing my mind at how stupid this fuckin burger looks. i can't believe they sell this as a regional specialty.

Just ran across yet another "[a food you buy] has weird ingredients in it that you can't pronounce." As the kids say, skill issue. If you'd paid attention in your various science classes you'd be able to pronounce them, and also know that few (likely none) of them are weird.

I also find this thought so bizarre because that’s THE BEST PHASE. It’s the time when you get to be the most purely creative while not worrying about logistics and logic, just hurling paint at the wall and seeing what shapes the splatter made. It’s the FUN part! Making it *work* is the hard bit!

I'm so excited that @gavthorpe.co.uk will be delivering this workshop at the Fair Realms Festival! I attended the same one at Edge-Lit 2018 & it unlocked so much for me in terms of my own writing practice I don't think I'd have a writing career without it. So - massive recommendation from me! 🖤

Early voting in NC started this week so I went and voted. (Assuming you are an American citizen), make a plan to go vote! All of the foot stomping and sharing and talking on social media doesn't matter a damn unless it reaches the ballot box. Get mad, vote angry.

Republican politicians are *obsessed* with schoolchildren coming home a different gender because of pro-trans teachers, WHICH NEVER HAPPENS. But they are completely indifferent to schoolchildren not coming home *at all* because of guns, WHICH HAPPENS ALL THE TIME!

Did a somewhat silly thing where I missed the 6th Book Birthday of INFINITE AND THE DIVINE on October 10th, but photos have reminded me this is the 6th Anniversary of my wife baking this awesome cake to celebrate it. (Particularly sweet given she has no interest in Warhammer.)

For years my stock answer has been Animatronic Dinosaurs.

question for the audience: if you were ultra rich (let’s say $25M), what completely frivolous thing are you buying?

Just a reminder, next Friday, October 23rd, I’ll be doing a Fireside Chat Q&A to benefit literacy charity Room to Read! I’ll be at Fa Gai in Central HK, doors at 5:30 PM, talking about writing for YouTube and SFF licensed fiction. Tickets still available! www.eventbrite.com/e/fireside-c...

Yes… as an Ohioan here, the long rivalry of Michigan v (the) Ohio State University plays well at the local level. It also insinuates that Rodger’s isn’t a true Michigander because he has lived out of state so much

For international followers, the University of Michigan sports teams are called The Wolverines so this works on a local level as well as sounding badass.

Acyn@acyn.bsky.social

El-Sayed: JD Vance called me a little weasel today. No, what you’re talking about is a fucking wolverine.

It’s more about what people outside the history discipline think it means. I’d have no problem saying it in an academic environment! I think it’s clearer in the UK where “public historian” is a title that exists and people understand what it means. In the US, not so much.

Bailey Poletti@baileypoletti.bsky.social

As someone technically with those credentials (I'm not really using them for much now though), I have no problem seeing you as a public historian and peer. Call yourself what you will, but I don't find you undeserving or misleading using the title "historian" in the least. Cheers!

Having said that, I’m totally fine with other people using the term about themselves (or about me). My wrestling matches with how to present myself are ultimately personal, not about others. But in a similar vein, I always say “writer” not “content creator.” I don’t create content, I write.

FWIW though I have a bachelor’s degree in history and work in history communication, I don’t generally call myself a “historian” because I feel like it oversells my credentials and might mislead people into thinking that I hold advanced degrees. Meanwhile…
