Hello members of the House of Lords 👋 Welcome to the debate on jury trials. Pull up a seat - everyone disagrees and the entire thing is on fire. But, sadly for you, it lands in your lap today👇🏼

💯The case for democracy is not that voters are always right, or wise, or good. It's that they can correct their mistakes. That's why it's so dangerous to have billionaires controlling the media or regulating the flow of information. It shuts down the immune system of democracy.

Rob Ford@robfordmancs.bsky.social

I was having conversations with journalists just a few months ago about whether democracy was doomed. Look at this year: Orban defeated. Vukic defeated. Bolsonaro Jr defeated. Trump heading to likely defeat in midterms. That’s the beauty of democracy. Voters can respond. Don’t count it out yet.

Exactly right. It's why the idea of "UK PLC" was so grotesque - as if a nation was just a limited company, that could be wound up, taken over, merged or dissolved, with no roots in the past and no responsibility to the future.

Politicians should look at the UK economy as a CEO would, says Lloyds Bank CEO From a bank that hasn't investigated HBOS frauds. No thank you. Companies enrich shareholders. Countries have entirely different purpose, governance, accountability. Must not be treated as corporations. archive.ph/lj45s

I feel sorry for Carrick, who seems like a decent man, with very little ego, who really loves the club and has never joined the "legends" soiling the bed. He's probably not a good enough manager, but United have become the Bermuda Triangle of world football. Even Pep, Cruyff & Fergie would struggle

I don't know how you can profess a God who "so loved the world that he gave his only son", or a Christ who "has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows", who wept for Jerusalem, and taught his disciples to "love one another, as I have loved you", and conclude that "empathy" is a bad thing.

The last season of The Boys was a mixed bag, but one thing it got absolutely right: large sections of MAGA would rather worship America than God and would prefer Trump/ Homelander to a "suffering servant".

When the tech-bros and their allies attack "the establishment" or "the elite", what they mean is "any site of power - including the democratic state - that might restrict their own actions". The alternative is not "freedom"; it is power for themselves to make decisions otherwise made by the state.

In case it still needs saying, the tech-bros do not believe in "free speech". They believe in "power": power to lift themselves above any limits on or consequences for their own speech, and power to determine what speech can be seen or heard by others.

(This, incidentally, is why democratic states should not wire companies like Palantir into essential services. The problem is not the "values" of their owners. It's the coercive power it gives those owners over states to which they are openly hostile, and whose authority they do not acknowledge).

In case it needs saying, the headline "Hurrah for the Blackshirts!" did not appear in the fashion pages.

So they're at it again 🙄 Torturing valid HMRC data to create wildly misleading headlines, designed to invoke fear and anger about immigrants. Same old, same old... (and you'll see just how old shortly!) 🧵1/28

Where should a student look for good *primary* sources on Goths and Goth subculture in late-twentieth-century Britain? You don't get a lot of ginger Goths, so it was never really my world.

On 26 October, we'll be marking 50 years since the IMF crisis by exploring the politics of economic shocks. What is it like to govern in an economic crisis? What happens when "the markets" turn on governments? And what does this mean for democracy? All welcome! www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/politics-a...

Reform spokesman Zia Yusuf is currently on the Today Programme. He seems to be arguing that asylum seekers are to blame for ambulance waiting times, youth unemployment and exam results in Wales. You couldn't satirise this. It's its own parody - which is a source of its strength.

I'm generally in favour of giving interviewees space to develop their answers without constant interruption, but that still leaves space for challenge. And Justin Webb should be careful of his tendency to say "right" & "sure" after answers. Plus: a question on Reform's finances wouldn't go amiss.

Public executions were not abolished out of tenderness towards the criminal. They were abolished because of the effect on the people watching, and the dangers of making human death a source of commercial entertainment. Here's Charles Dickens in The Times, after witnessing an execution in 1849.

"Christian nationalism" in the UK is essentially a post-religious identity. Unlike the evangelical right in the US, it has no theological content, does not require belief in God & demands no moral or religious commitment. It reduces Christianity to a cultural "heritage" to be "defended" from Islam

It's become a catchphrase for Badenoch that "We have to be SERIOUS" - and she's right about that. Yet every announcement is like this: a burst whoopie-cushion of wrong numbers, bungled data and stuff someone found on Google. The gulf between rhetoric and reality is positively cavernous.

NEW: Kemi Badenoch’s flagship party conference policy document, The Right Way, overestimated the cost of net zero by nearly £500bn, seemingly after someone accidentally double-counted figures on a spreadsheet. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Have just spotted the most cataclysmic typo I have ever committed in an email, which instantly turned a blameless sentence into a completely foul one. The recipient must have thought I was out of my mind. I may never go near a computer again.

This will be brilliant! Do come.

The coverage of Badenoch in the Tory press is staggeringly sycophantic. Like @lewisgoodall.com, I suspect this is counterproductive. It cocoons the party within a fantasy world in which it's smashing the polls, laying waste to Labour & preparing for govt, while concealing the peril of its position

Tim Bale@timbale.bsky.social

There’s a reason, when writing my first book on the Tories, that I insisted on the importance of “the party in the media” as an integral part of their milieu.

I'm feeling bad about the mouse in my office, after taking away the small bag of nuts he'd chewed into. I know he's still in there, as the trail of little pellets demonstrates, but they're getting fewer and further between.

Badenoch says that Labour "don’t get a clean slate just because they have changed leader". Yet whenever she's challenged on the Conservatives' record in government, she dismisses the question on the grounds that she wasn't leader then...

I understand the desire to speak well of the dead, and am sure that Archer, like all of us, was a mix of good and bad. But the tendency to indulge dishonesty, so long as it's by a loveable scamp, has done real damage to British politics. We should be a bit wary of the "isn't he a card?" thing.

Adam Macqueen@adammacqueen.bsky.social

Just as a counterpoint to some of the obituaries this morning, here's the start of the Archer chapter in my history of political lying, The Lies of the Land:

Kemi Badenoch, who is currently purging the Tory candidates list, tells Today she stands for "uniting the country" and wants to "bring the country together". She then laments the Coalition years when "we had to make concessions". It's amazing how often "unity" means "everyone must agree with me".

In temperament, though not in policy, there is something quite Corbynite about Badenoch. There's the same unwavering conviction that she's right; the same assumption that opponents are bad people with deplorable motives; and the same tendency to think that "unity" means everyone agreeing with her.

I should add that this was one of Badenoch's better media performances - and was also much better handled by Anna Foster than her interview with Emma Barnett last month. It really is helpful to hear full answers to questions, without constant interruptions and gotchas.

Today I accidentally tore my trousers asunder in a sensitive area, requiring me to move around the classroom in the afternoon with a seat clamped to my behind. I now have to do the Cersei walk of shame through the London Underground & avoid arrest on the train back to Oxford. How's your day going?

Needless to say, I will not be at tonight's @mileendinstitute.bsky.social event, which is the only reason I was wearing the suit in the first place. "What makes a graduate "future-ready"?" A functioning pair of trousers would be a good start. www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/what-makes...

The ability to pour hundreds of millions of pounds into a loss-making TV channel, bent on wrenching British politics sharply to the right, is yet another of the ways in which extreme wealth is trying to remake UK democracy. It needs to be part of any serious conversation about political funding.

Latest blog is on Burnham's promise of 'pragmatism' in the North Sea, why it's a weaselly word that is providing cover for deeply unpragmatic actions, and why the climate movement needs to talk more about the climate crisis. www.businessgreen.com/blog-post/45...

This peculiar analogy confuses creativity & replication. We already have "machine-made" books: they're not copied out by hand but printed on presses, just as clothes might be stitched mechanically. But getting a machine to do the writing - the ideas, the thoughts, the "design" - is very different.
