I keep thinking about how PFAs are in our rain water now. And how that feels like there’s really no safe place, and how that’s a really privileged take since in my country of residence global majority presenting people have felt no safety here.

Daughter of Broccoli just translated violin music to her little keyboard piano. Then she got bored of that and composed her own piano song. She was scribbling furiously on paper, and writing it out. 😳 There’s no limit to what kids can do when you turn off screens and feed them healthy food. 😳

In a landmark decision following months of “occupy wallstreet” protests, where people were pepper sprayed for enacting their 1st amendment rights to assemble, petition their government, and speak freely, the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) spent $475 BILLION to relieve banks and corporations.

Matthew Shepard was twenty-one years old. He was gentle and kind. On this night in 1998, he lay tied to a wooden fence for eighteen hours under the bright Wyoming stars. Not for any crime he committed. He lay there, alone and cold, simply for existing as a gay man.

It’s hard to watch people cooking their mom’s Korean recipes without getting a little envious. A lot envious. Reminders that what I’ve managed to piece together myself throughout my life has been no small feat. Asking the questions my appearance demands I should already know the answers to.

I think there’s this really toxic relationship with food that runs through both sides of my adoptive family. As if healthy food is something that should be flavorless and boring. As if you can’t satisfy cravings by nourishing both your spirit and your body.

Many cultures and Koreans included don’t treat food that way at all. Food is an experience that can bring people together. Food is bursting with flavors, colors, and textures. Food is joy because life is purposeful and abundant and important.

When you’re ugly on the outside, but inside is beautiful. And maybe you don’t feel like much, but your worth is more than just surface level bullshit. And maybe what’s outside is protective because the aphids that wanted to eat you alive couldn’t touch you. 😭❤️

Hard lessons in cooking: If you cut the ginger nubs off from the root the rest of the root will mold. If you snap them off instead, the root will stay fine. If you peel your ginger with a spoon you will have more ginger. If you peel it off with a peeler you will have less. 🤷🏻‍♀️

After a full day of swatting at Sandy the Black Labrador and attacking the dining room chairs, Pooh Bear the Tabby kitten has settled in for his pre zoomies nap. Full squeak snores in effect. His favorite position: the Shrimp pose 🦐

I remember little toy flags littering the street gutters. I remember headlines about people being racially profiled for “looking middle eastern” and being dragged and fought in public for it. I remember a hate filled nation entering an endless “war on terror” and millions worldwide protesting it.

I was a 30 year old high school teacher on 9/11. Please miss me forever on talk about how it "united" us. I spent the year fighting with casually islamophic coworkers (teachers!) and principals who were staging classroom "anthrax drills." It brought out the worst in the worst people.
