Another life update: I was just laid off from my day job last week due to poor finances and that really throws a wrench into a lot of things for me. The company I was working for treated me with such little respect despite asking for so much from me beyond what was agreed on.

However I've learned that I need to enforce some boundaries and limits in work I do outside of gamedev because what I was doing for a paycheck was not sustainable mentally and physically. I'm not sure how to solve this long term but gamedev will be my priority for a bit.

I'm sorry if things have been slow from me recently, that job took a toll on my health. On the plus side, I now have more time to work on my next game and that is what I will do. Will have a lot to share in about a month so please continue to look forward to that! Thank you ❤️

And I say "the company", but I can name specific people above me who very purposefully ignored me & refused to communicate. They couldn't even be bothered to say "sorry, we can't do that", instead just total silence. How do you treat someone like that and sleep soundly at night?

So it goes without saying I am frustrated, upset, and now these people who did this will just continue on like they did nothing wrong. I might have more to say on this later but now I have to rethink everything AGAIN. Job searching is impossible & gamedev is not sustaining me.

When I tried to talk to them about my lack of health insurance and PTO (for doing the same amount of work as everyone else that did get those benefits) or responsibilities they expected of me outside of my job description, they did NOTHING in response.

On top of this, I feel there is a certain "feedback etiquette" that is often ignored even in creative circles. Especially while something is in development, unless the creator explicitly asked for feedback, they might not want to hear criticism! I personally criticize myself so much already...

That feedback then ends up not being useful because I'm not trying to gauge whether the whole thing is fully good/perfect now, I'm trying to find out if I'm on the right track *so far*. Hearing that then just makes me feel down, almost as if I was punished for trying to get thoughts on it early.

That's not to say feedback is never warranted and that I never want to hear it, not at all. In fact, I appreciate thoughtful and respectful reviews on Steam & elsewhere when the relevant project is complete. But before that point, try to consider the creator. Art is not an easy career mentally.

...That it is harmful and destructive to my own work. If anything, sometimes I need encouragement in the process even when things are not going well. If I want to improve a part of my projects, I will seek out opinions and weigh them against what I am capable of achieving. It takes time.

Additionally, I find it often the case that I will show someone something & explicitly say that it is a work in progress (going completely over their head) and they say that they don't like it because it's missing XYZ. But like... I'm going to add XYZ eventually, that's why it's in progress!

To this day this is possibly still the (unintentionally) funniest scene I've created in my career. Don't worry, there is a NET BELOW HER SHE IS FINE! She just happens to perform stunts with the grace of a rock and we love that for her ❤️ #gamedev #indiedev #indiegame #burdenofproof #vndev

HUGE thank you to @green-art.bsky.social for these incredible pieces of Flocking fanart! I am honored that you found my character designs inspiring, this is genuinely impressive & hilarious work ❤️ Finally, the Burden of Truth yoga ball gets some love🔥 #fanart #characterdesign #art #characterart

For my next game project I set out to build editor tools to improve level creation; I came up with a spline-driven object placement system for easily placing down roads, tree lines, city blocks, or bridges! It's FREE & open source on my Github :) #gamedev #opensource github.com/RobProductio...

Instead of creating a full procedural city builder, this tool will allow me to place down regions of buildings from a preset list of building variants I'll make. I found it to be a good compromise between system complexity and manual placement.

I'm definitely using it for elevated highways as well! Road decals that stick perfectly to terrain ended up stretching too much and didn't have the right look, but mesh roads would be tough to match to the ground. My solution was to just keep the main roads in the air :)

On today's edition of rare Burden of Truth dialogue lines, I bring you this. ⚖️ Burden of Truth is 20% off NOW on Steam! ⚖️ s.team/a/2923050 #gamedev #indiedev #pcgaming #screenshot #indiegame #burdenoftruth #puzzlegame

Thank you Hawk for completing the entire game! This was a blast to watch and I loved all of hilarious reactions you had to the chaotic humor I put into the project :D Burden of Proof 3 WILL be made, but in the meantime I hope you enjoy some of my past games! (Check your inbox 😉) Till next time!

I used to look up to Andrew Price & he was a big reason that I was able to learn 3D art for my games. He even critiqued some of my early works on his review show long before the donut tutorial. To see that he has fallen this far and associated with a known bigot is disappointing.

View full thread

However, the kind of AI that Price seems to be advocating for literally generates pixels to create compositions for you and generates detailed meshes (probably with terrible topology) based some vague prompts/images you throw at it. 3D artists have already lost jobs from this.

There is no world in which this creates more jobs for artists. We were already struggling to survive before large companies felt that they could replace us with a tool. I will accept a "lowered efficiency" creating art if it means authenticity and true expression of ideas.

This is something I spoke about in my video about DLSS 5, but part of the point of art is that is an expression of human emotion/experience. I can understand people using some form of AI in the process but the more we accept/celebrate it the less society will value human artists.

Today I attended my first protest here in NJ because the racist, bigoted administration destroying our country needs to understand that this is what democracy looks like. Protect the LGBTQ+ community. Abolish ICE. Justice for Alex Pretti and Renée Good. #nokings #protest #justice

Though it might sound like a small win, I was actually stuck on this problem for over a month and thought it might ruin the project. After discovering a material setting I missed, I can now sort transparent objects behind Unity's volumetric cloud system 😅 #graphics #gamedev #indiedev #indiegame

I experimented with ~10 different replacement cloud techniques, from GPU simulated particles all the way to my own volumetric shader. Nothing was working out and I didn't have the bandwidth to really invest time in it. All of that just to wrap back around to my starting idea lol

Yesterday the temperature was nearly 80 degrees and today it's snowing but some people still refuse to believe climate change is affecting the weather

I'm still working through a lot of stuff in gamedev & life but I'm now getting a bit back on track in terms of regular development progress and not feeling quite as stuck. In the meantime check out the water I made using a StackLit shader graph material! #gamedev #indiedev #3dart #indiegame #shader

I've been head down for a bit in underlying systems & tech for visuals (building a cloud system has been ruining me...) so I haven't been able to share much, so I appreciate your patience as I slowly get back on my feet. Hoping the effort will pay off for this new game 🫡
