Too many people use social media to convince you that they are cool and interesting. I am neither and I make it obvious, which is why you have to like me.

It's incredibly frustrating how efforts to educate the CA public on props 40, 41, and 42 are entirely too late because with all the misleading ads we've seen in the last 2 months it's basically too late now. I truly hope people actually read the voter guides but I am not at all optimistic.

Journaling and doodling instead of doomscrolling works. Today I got online and didn't get a comedic post referencing a political gaffe from this morning. I am at least 24 hours behind on the news.

Decided I'm going to Disneyland for my 40th not because I'm a Disney adult but because I have so much expensive travel in the near term that it was actually the cheapest option for a full day of fun. Also Nov 5th in the states is famously not a fun day but at least theme parks are nearly empty.

Also it's criminal to be born on Guy Fawkes day and to not get to live in England. Genuinely sucks. I could be blowing shit up from dusk til dawn but instead I'm always disappointed by the voter turnout and nobody wants to hang because they're too tired from Halloween.

I'm going to say something so incredibly brave as a millennial with certifiably good taste in music: Accelerando's lyrics are godawful but the song is so good that it doesn't actually matter. The screaming is very Bjork. The video also fucking rips.

This is basically every interaction on the internet now and I would just love it if everyone took an extra strength chill pill

Merriam Webster out here fighting for its life

Watching people sincerely argue about whether a restaurant's value is the quality of food or the quality of service and their utter lack of respect for one another's opinions on a completely subjective thing.. guys..

I wonder what it's like for people who never feel remorse. I'm not religious but I often find myself feeling penitent for even the most minor missteps. Did my lack of enthusiasm to chat with the cashier ruin their evening? I deserve to have stubbed my toe immediately after.

Upon extensive research, I have concluded that failing upwards is exclusive to evil stupid people. If you're well-meaning, unfortunately you have to work really hard. Bummer!

When will this bozo's 40 kids and 12 ex wives finally beat him to death?

NEW: Elon Musk has assembled a presidential-level field operation this midterm cycle, underscoring the extent to which he has taken over the get-out-the-vote effort for the Republican party. WIRED's tracking his America PAC funding efforts here - read @hugolowell.bsky.social + @dell.bsky.social:

I'm so sorry but if you're that close with a prick this stupid and evil and all you're doing is interviews, you fucking suck. There is nothing cunt or cool about you.

Yesterday I was advised that Jonathan Taylor Thomas, my millennial crush who famously stepped back from Hollywood to be normal, kicked a cop in the stomach while yelling "it's Tool Time!" While my fully developed frontal lobe immediately flagged exaggeration, I have decided I want to believe this.

Checking your local DSA chapter voting guide is literally the easiest thing you can do as far as research goes if you don't feel like thinking. I even appreciate when they don't have a recc that they explain why.

I wanted to do something crazy for my 40th. Turns out I'll have to go to Russia for 2 weeks and take an enormous amount of financial and physical risk. I really have to stop manifesting shit without being specific.

It's great that I took all those acting classes because now I have to go to Russia and pretend to be upset that Ukraine is soo much better at trolling than us.

Gillis bombing SNL negates him selling out a stadium, so now he's just a dude on Tires and that's really where he needs to stay his ass at.

"You're not excited we're going to Vegas? Not even for free? Why?" "Because living there was like serving a life sentence on a Martian prison. I wanted to veer off the freeway into the side of a building in hopes of ending it all." "What?" "Sorry what I meant was I'm just not a desert person."

One time I was at a recording studio, the owner's name was Fernando. He was sitting at the boards and his tech asked if he could hear the drums. I perked up and immediately sang the line "can you hear the drums, Fernando?" Everyone looked at me like I was fucking insane. In a recording studio!!

The party committee at my job used so much AI to generate ideas for our holiday retreat that they ended up telling everyone the suggested DRESS code was "midcentury modern" and attached the worst AI renders of vaguely Mad Men on a golf course type shit to go along with it. I am so tired.

I'mma dust off the roflmao for this one

Trump: "With the war, it's just artificial. It's a little bit high. It's a small price to pay ... let them take out Los Angeles, let them take out San Diego. This is a very small price to pay."

You can make incredible games with some of the best writing and visuals, win awards etc, and still have everything slip through your fingers like sand. Damn.

I'm aware of the history of East of Eden and that might be the most interesting thing about it. Without Lee's story in the new show (which wasn't even that big of a deal in the book and was entirely left out of the original movie adaptation) there's really nothing there to chew on.

Also, if you're doing an adaptation of material now considered deeply problematic, you can either remain loyal to its depiction or you should rewrite the damn thing. Emphasizing Cathy's childhood abuse does nothing to garner sympathy for her as an adult because she doesn't struggle with it at all.

Also the original story hinges on the concept that "some people are just evil and there's no explanation" if you're not changing that as the central theme then why did you waste my time with a backstory, sis? It's meaningless and just makes me uncomfortable to watch.

Everyone's acting was fantastic but the story, without Lee, is so flat. Woman who has sex is evil! She kills to obtain freedom, also! She spends her whole life clawing her way to riches aaaaand just kidding she kills herself and leaves her fortune to *checks notes* a son she never once cared about??

I'm hoping that people can tell by now that when something is being shoved in front of your face like this (I see this ad at least one time for every piece of online media I consume) that it's blatantly lying to you. "Teachers and firefighters agree!" yeah fuckin right dude, get absolutely taxed.

Oliver Willis@owillis.bsky.social

If you have $100 million to spend on ads saying you shouldn’t be taxed you’re not being taxed enough Google cofounder Sergey Brin has spent $102 million to fight California’s proposed billionaire tax—he could owe $13 billion if he loses fortune.com/article/how-...
