In addition to being very cute, "Comparing sleep across such different animals can help us understand how sleep evolved, which features are ancient, and what functions different sleep stages may serve." 💤🕷️ 🧪

A new study has found a species of #jumpingspider experiences at least two sleep stages, including one resembling REM. 🥹🕷️ #entomology #arachnology www.abc.net.au/news/science...

Great thread on spider snoozles.

🕷️💤 New paper in time for 🎃! Do #spiders really sleep? In our new study on #Portia fimbriata we tested all behavioural criteria of #sleep and found evidence for regulated, two-stage sleep with recurring REM-like stages. Out in @pnas.org! @roesslerdaniela.bsky.social 📄 tinyurl.com/3fky8ze7 🧵1/9

I feel like @aptshadow.bsky.social might appreciate this one: scientists have discovered that Portia jumping spiders experience REM-like sleep, and even make up for it when they're deprived. THE SPIDERS ACCRUE SLEEP DEBT. 🕷️ www.sciencealert.com/spiders-can-...

Why this matters: A. diadematus is a common, accessible, #nonmodel species. If a backyard orb‑weaver shows clear sleep‑like arousal patterns in the wild, we suddenly have a powerful system for studying how sleep evolved, outside the lab, in real ecological contexts. 🧵4/5

We tested wild Araneus diadematus with an auditory stimulus: a 400 Hz sound triggering a stereotyped "leg raising" reaction. Active spiders reacted fast irrespective of night or day. Immobile spiders during the day? Also fast. Immobile spiders at night? Much slower! 🧵2/5

We do an awful lot of looooong video recordings in our lab and have long wanted an easy way to clip, compress and combine videos for our workflows. So here's #croppy! 🦀 I hope others will find it useful too - I'd love to hear if you do! And would appreciate if you give it a star on Github! 🌟

Daniela Rößler@roesslerdaniela.bsky.social

Our postdoc @roald-arboel.com made a thing! #Croppy is #free and awesome for fast and effective #video #editing and it has a #GUI! Need to crop a part of a video? Need to trim a video? Need to combine videos? Need to compress a video? roald-arboel.com/croppy/

“Jobs” is where you manage all the jobs you’ve created. You can start or stop jobs and monitor their progress. If your computer has multiple GPU/CPU cores, you can even choose to run jobs in parallel for a nice speed-up.

“Compress” allows you to change the encoding of a file, which often means compressing to save space. But it can e.g. also be used to change your “.mov” file to “.mp4” or lower your frame rate.

Don’t want to use expensive video editing software or use ffmpeg in the terminal? Croppy is for YOU! For all actions, you choose where the new files go, what they’ll be called, and how they’re encoded. If you have a GPU, then Croppy detects it automatically to allow you to speed things up-no fuzz.

Spider running performance varies enormously. We joined forces with David Labonte's Evolutionary Biomechanics lab in London for the broadest spider speed assay so far: 258 spp / 139 families Preprint: doi.org/10.64898/202... Press coverage by the New Scientist: www.newscientist.com/article/2532...

New paper alert!🕷️✨ Tiny spider. Shiny abdomen. Suspiciously wiggly bum. In our new study, we asked what abdomen bobbing in this jumping spider is really all about: Cute? Yes. Meaningful? Let’s find out...! [1/8] @unibonn.bsky.social link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00265-026-03745-1
