Democrats are in denial. Neither mass protests nor lawsuits will stop ICE. It has virtually unlimited funds, support of a rubber-stamp Congress, and strategic direction by a bitter, determined clique around Trump.

Long before Nov 3rd, ICE will metastasize in purple (swing) states, where it will foment chaos and sow fear. Voters of color will stay home, giving the elections to the GOP.

To forestall this assault on democracy, each blue state must establish a posse comitatus to arrest and prosecute lawless ICE agents. There’s no other way.

Democrats are fanning out to hold town halls in red districts & states, a duty forsaken by Republicans. The goal is to further discredit an unhinged "mad king," turn up the heat on GOP lawmakers, and build the resistance. 2/2

Trump identifies with authoritarian leaders, esp Putin. He shares their worldview and aspires to be one of them. For such authoritarians—as Ben-Ghiat points out—democracies are the problem. Trump wants to remake the US into an authoritarian regime, so it won't be a problem, and he can join the club.

Trump described Putin’s invasion of Ukraine as “genius” and “savvy.” He now wants to emulate Putin's imperialist agenda.

Trump’s schemes for world domination include the invasion and annexation of Canada. This is not a drill. This is not a joke. This is an evil, megalomaniacal plot. Trump’s insistence that Canada is not a real country is eerily similar to Vladimir Putin’s arguments in the run-up to his invasion…

I’ve not always been a Bernie fan, but I feel he’s pointing Democrats in the right direction, now. And they’re beginning to follow his lead, with plans for Democratic town halls in all 50 states, starting with red ones.

The New Republic@newrepublic.com

What Sanders has been doing recently is highly instructive—and Democrats don’t need to be die-hard enthusiasts of his particular policy portfolio to extract the key lesson and act on it: Identify the victims of Trumpism, give them a voice, and get their stories told.

Democratic rank-and-file want performative politics to provide them a much-needed catharsis. But one thing is clear to me. The economy is tanking, and voters are pinning it on Trump. A government shutdown facilitated by the Democrats would muddle the one issue that can pull Trump down.

Must watch: GOP Senator Roger Marshall stands up and flees his own town hall meeting today after being asked why Republicans think it’s acceptable for DOGE to be firing Veterans. This is a very rural, very conservative town.

Many who voted for Trump were not committed MAGA voters. They did not vote for dismantling the govt, nor taking over the Gaza Strip. Many of them are now expressing remorse. They must be brought into a broad coalition to preserve our democracy. 1/2

Dem leaders have been flailing, unable to agree on how to stop Trump. What is the way forward? The party can help to build such a broad coalition. An ad campaign to channel voters’ anger & frustration would be a good place to start. 2/2

Repubs propose $4.5 trillion in tax cuts that go mainly to wealthy, paid by $1.5 trillion in cuts to Medicaid, SNAP, education and other programs that help average Americans. Dems are flailing; they can’t see beyond beltway. Why not a national media campaign denouncing this cynical budget proposal?

Put out in video form through scores of channels, mainstream and alternative, EVERY DAY. That's what our Democratic leaders need to do. Draw in the public because only the public can stop the fElon and his Elon. 2/2

For years, I’ve argued that Trump is a cult leader. If he loses credibility, the cult fever will break, and his followers drift away. But readers replied, “MAGA base will never change.” Well, some are now changing, expressing remorse for supporting Trump. Maybe there’s hope for democracy after all.

Hell yeah. Hold the line. This is what we need people to do. Slow things down, don’t comply in advance so the courts have time to stop them. It’s starting to work.

Received a letter from POTUS today purporting to remove me as Commissioner and Chair of the FEC. There's a legal way to replace FEC commissioners-this isn't it. I've been so fortunate to serve the American people and stir up some good trouble along the way. That's not changing anytime soon.

When food and gas prices spike, when vaccines are no longer available, or special ed is dropped at school, voters will become angry and disillusioned. Party labels will become less important. Democrats must make sure voters know who is responsible, starting now with constituent town halls.

Spontaneous demonstrations all over the country, calls to Congress numbering in thousands per minute, all expose white hot anger among many voters—many, but not all. The rest will have to experience firsthand what loss of government services means before they, too, take to streets.

Trump & Musk are taking wrecking ball to govt. What motivates them? Retribution? Firing thousands of employees, & closing agencies certainly smells of that. But main goal is larger & more sinister, a so-called "unitary executive." With all institutional restraints & competing power centers gone, 1/2

one man, standing alone among the wreckage, wields total power. Another question: what does Musk want? Profit for his companies? Or power? Does he forsee himself supplanting Trump & becoming "unitary excutive"? One thing is certain: as voter rage builds, Trump will not hesitate to blame Musk. 2/2

Senate Dems held floor all night to protest one cabinet nomination, delayed another for a week. Senate Dems need new, dynamic leader who, like House counterpart, understands solution to current crisis does not lie in DC, but with American people, and who'll send members home to talk w/ constituents.

Dem House Leader Jeffries has instructed his caucus to go home and hold town halls about current crisis. He understands solution does not lie in DC, but among American people. Dems need a new Senate leader with same outward vision—like Sen Chris Murphy of CT, who can deliver a rousing call to arms.

Trump wants the U.S. to take ownership of the Gaza Strip, expel the two million residents, and develop a Middle East Riviera. Who do you think would get the development contracts?

1/2 Trump is taking a wrecking ball to our govt. How can he be stopped? The courts are slow and will probably be ignored by Trump. What’s worked in other countries are daily mass protests. Such protests will erupt if Trump continues to overstep, e.g. by closing Educ Dept or tampering with SS pmts..

2/2 —govt services many depend on, even his own MAGA base. As protests spread to red states, GOP lawmakers will feel emboldened to challenge Trump. Stopping him will ultimately depend on his own MAGA base.

Repubs in Congress have abdicated responsibility to Constitution. They’re mere toadies to deranged & dangerous president. In just two weeks he's inflicted enormous damage on this country. But that will pale before the damage soon caused by tariffs. At what point will these Republicans say, "Enough"?

Elon Musk now has access to govt paymt systems used to deliver SS & Medicare benefits, among others. He not only has access, but control too. This gives him & Trump power to cut off funds selectively to any dissident individual or group they want to control or punish. This is path to a police state.

Sen Chuck Schumer is a good man and an effective legislator, but the times call for a leader more feisty, more combative, with greater communication skills. I call upon him to step down in favor of someone like Sen Chris Murphy of Connecticut, who can deliver a powerful call to arms.

If Trump goes ahead with his tariff plan, the economy may fall into recession and/or inflation may spike. It will be a time of peak precarity for Trump and his allies. All Americans of good will must take the opportunity to pressure Congress—Democrats and Republicans alike—to rein in this tyrant.
