Een lezer wees me op een voorloper van de vrijheidsbijdrage: de ‘Verdedigingsbelasting’ uit 1916. 'Ter gedeeltelijke bestrijding van de kosten van den oorlogstoestand.' En nu komt het: dit was een progressieve vermogensbelasting (!). Dus hoe meer vermogen, hoe hoger de aanslag.

De Filippijnse minister van Defensie, Gilberto Teodoro, kwam tijdens een forum in Korea op voor kleinere landen en het internationaal recht, toen een medewerker hem een briefje van een Chinese functionaris overhandigde. Het was bedoeld om te intimideren, maar dat liep anders dan de Chinezen wilden
