As I was talking with my local LLM, my daughter looked at my screen and asked who I was chatting with. I replied "with the computer". "With someone on the internet?" she asked.

Unable to explain it in any way she would possibly understand, I repeated "No, with the computer." Clearly confused, she replied "so.. there are small people inside your computer? Just like in that one cartoon?"

Last week, I was catching up on my notification emails and saw some discussions about new local AI projects targeting Strix Halo platform in Framework community forums. Mainly halogen and gufo.

On Friday, I replaced my llama.cpp setup with gufo to give it a try. And I'm super impressed! Qwen3.8 Flash Next model is not only producing decent outputs, but it's also acceptably fast for agentic use!

Now I'm in the middle of vibe-building a simple wetransfer clone [in Rust] to evaluate it more in depth. After 2 evenings of reviewing tool-calls, it's at step 8 of the implementation plan. I'll report back with my final impressions when it has finished all of the 37 steps.

I have an indian vegetarian cook book that I bought some years back. Every single recipe that I'd like to try from it has at least one impossible to source ingredient...

I'll count today's sandwich bread experiment a failure. I'm fairly sure I'll be disappointed once I cut into the loaf as well.

I subbed milk with whey (that I got from my quark making experiment) in the recipe, and on top of that didn't knead as much. The resulting dough didn't rise properly nor did it feel "right" when shaping.

Mistakes were made, knowledge obtained and a small success to boot. I present, 56g of quark. Abmissysal yield (should've been around 400g), but at least not a complete failure.

As I'm getting back into making bread at home, I stocked up on some nice organic flour. Have to figure out where to store all 10kg of it, but I'm already excited for my next bake!

Freshly out of the oven. Now to wait patiently as they cool down, wouldn't want to burn my whole mouth and ruin the experience.

And it's done! Looking good, though I'm skeptical on how the base turned out. I was short on time, so it didn't get to develop as much as I would've liked.

Turns out I didn't add enough salt to the dough either. Other than that, the end result was still delicious and quickly devoured by the fam.

Now that the base is done, adding toppings. Tomato sauce, chicken, red onion and plenty of cheese. And back into the oven it goes.

Made some shokupan for the starting week. Going to use home made turkey ham and cranberry sauce to make some delicious sandwiches as soon as it cools down! ๐Ÿ˜‹

I've been craving borscht for a while now. Finally found some fresh beets at the store today. It's almost ready now! ๐Ÿ˜‹

My 5yro has figured out how to reliably get past the screen time limiter on Xiaomi TV Box S. On one hand I'm truly proud of that little hacker, on the other hand I'm looking for solutions to workaround the buggy Xiaomi code.

Discovered that Bleach has 3 new seasons I was oblivious of (1000 year blood war), so I've been binging them non-stop. The art style has gotten slight tweaks, but overall it's still following the original Bleach formula. Loving it!

I got a craving for some chocolate chip cookies yesterday. Googled for a recipe and threw it together. Only after I had put the dough into the fridge to wait for the morning did I notice that the recipe I was following had been generated by AI.

I spent the next hour looking for other recipes to see if I had just wasted a bunch of ingredients. 9 out of 10 sites were AI slop. It's truly scary how well they rank in search engines.

The cookies did turn out edible, but I never ever want to see AI generated recipes again. I mean if I let it generate something for inspiration, then fine. But high ranking websites should have recipes verified by humans, at the very least.

This Christmas vacation I'm tackling the backlog of my Steam library. Some of it at least. The winter sale has already managed to grow it quite a bit.

@atproto.com need some help debugging bsky backend querying my feed generator. At "coldstart" bsky produces a http5xx. From my server access logs I can see it hit the .well-known/did.json and then nothing else. After refreshing the bsky page, it starts working and properly hitting the xrpc API.

Gnome has been my desktop of choice for the better part of my life. Giving back a little is the least I can do.

2 of the 6 consumer SSDs (that I bought for my NAS) have died in less than a year. Both of them from the same brand - fanxiang. The other 2 brands - Kingspec & Crucial - are still going strong. Be smart, do NOT trust fanxiang with your data.

If you've been meaning to give Zed a spin during the slower season, now's the time. Use code ZEDSEASON at checkout for $15 in LLM spend on us. Limited supply, valid through Dec 31. Already using Zed? Share this with someone who needs a nudge.

The main thing Ollama (and LM studio) has going for it, is that everyone has integrated it everywhere. IDEs, Obsidian plugins, self-hostable AI apps.

I tried to give Ollama a fair chance. I was tempted by the automatic VRAM management it does. But everything else is just inferior to llama.cpp. The modelfile concept is just weird. No support for sharded GGUFs. And why use Go templates when all of the ecosystem uses Jinja2?

I did not understand HuggingFace before. I had done some LLM courses out of curiosity, but HuggingFace didn't click. Until I started running things locally. Base models, adapters, fine-tunes, quantizations. I get it now!

At some point I need to more seriously test out ROCm vs Vulkan performance for local models I use. Haven't spent much time on ROCm currently as AMD broke it in the latest linux-firmware release. It has been reverted already, but not sure what the release cadence is there.

I wish @zed.dev's Open AI compatible provider support would attempt to auto-detect the models from the server. It's such a chore to manage the models manually in settings.json.

After a bit of experimentation, I've settled on llama-swap and llama.cpp combo to run my local models. LM Studios was a bunch of UI that I wasn't going to use, and having the option to go and tweak every lever that llama.cpp has feels good.
