New MORE JAM TOMORROW It’s better than the alternative, right? From the pensioners who fled to Spain to the prospect of retiring at 68 … @historianhelen.bsky.social and I talk about how getting old ain’t what it used to be. morejamtomorrow.com/episode/old-...

Netflix. What do you like about it, what do you hate? Has it lost its mojo? For a piece I’m writing (I also have a focus group of 17yo girls, but want the Bluesky take too).

This is where I try to get to the bottom of what a National Care Service would actually do, and pay for Curb your expectations, though not your enthusiasm, obvs

It’s a welcome idea for a huge societal problem. But it’s still not clear how a service of this kind would work – or how it would be paid for ✏️ Ros Taylor

New from me. If AISI isn't looking at how AI will alter society, who is?

Didn’t have time to say it, but the Brazilian left does need to find a charismatic younger leader. Lula is 80 and can’t go on forever.

If an AI agent really could carry out ghastly bot-chats for me, well. But could I really trust it? So often the problems you take to bots are too complex for them to solve...

I must admit I find the ‘Prepping’s not my job! What’s the government going to do for us in an emergency / stop the emergency from happening?’ reflex … odd.

And I also think there’s an element of ‘I lived through COVID! Can’t take any more emergencies! Don’t make me think about more bad shit happening in my lifetime!’

Reminds me a bit of an anti-Brexit event I did at the start of 2020. 25 January, in fact. I was asked about the future. I said this new virus would hit the economy and that would distract people from Brexit. There were tuts and sighs.

I must admit I find the ‘Prepping’s not my job! What’s the government going to do for us in an emergency / stop the emergency from happening?’ reflex … odd.

I think the lesson of COVID, for some anti-preppers, is that the govt can cope in a crisis by telling people what to do. This works if there is still plenty of food/water/ power. Doesn’t work if not, and for all it will try the govt may not be able to restore them immediately.

The interesting thing, of course, is just how willing people can be to do what the govt says when they feel personally threatened. See the cat and dog cull of 1939/40. This suggests that people do not feel any fear right now. Probably because the threat feels distant and uncertain.

I must admit I find the ‘Prepping’s not my job! What’s the government going to do for us in an emergency / stop the emergency from happening?’ reflex … odd.

We all like the idea of a National Care Service, but what would it actually do? If you hope the answer is 'offer pretty much all the care I need', you're probably going to be disappointed ... I talked to experts about the really hard choices awaiting Burnham. www.thenewworld.co.uk/ros-taylor-w...

None of us want to hear this. We want an NCS that's like the NHS, free at the point of use (cough, mostly). But while you shouldn't curb your enthusiasm, you should curb your expectations.

First off, what about the 300k people who aren't elderly but need care? Scotland initially excluded them from its free home care, but did a u-turn because it was manifestly unfair. Then, what IS care? It's not simple and it'll have to be legally defined if people have a right to it.

In Scotland, bathing, continence and providing food is personal care. But support outside the home isn't, and nor is laundry or housework. Then the big one ... what about care home fees? Massive burden for people who aren't poor enough to get the council to pay. But you'd need +++ tax for it.

The idea the BBC can’t afford an Education Correspondent is crazy 13 million pupils/students & a similar number of parents adds up to more than a third of the population It seems to be managed by people who don’t clock the need not to alienate the people who’ve always defended it

NEW: BBC will no longer have a dedicated education editor as part of proposal that will see 100 jobs go across BBC News. School leaders call the plan “deeply regrettable” and ask for a rethink. Education/Social affairs editor jobs being combined. www.theguardian.com/media/2026/o...

Taken aback, when doing the ONS Labour Force phone survey just now, to be told that my MS could be helped by EE QUANTUM SYSTEMS and I should check out the website!

If one more tosser calls me on my mobile and offers me a part-time job, I swear I'll ... oh, there's nothing I can do, they've found a way of scamming people with absolutely no comeback.

Why is my day now regularly interrupted by people lying and trying to scam me? The even have the balls to pretend they have read my book about – yes – TRUST.

Agree that ‘publishing guidance on how limiting visiting will be decided upon in a future pandemic’ is an (inevitable) cop out. The next pandemic will be different. Spread differently. Kill different ages. Be more or less lethal. Not possible to predict what public opinion will demand/tolerate.

One-sixth of £300m for this? covid19.public-inquiry.uk/reports/modu...

It would have been more useful to say: the visiting rules were inhumane. We don’t know how to square that with the fact that elderly people are vulnerable to infectious disease.
