Three logicians walk into a bar. The bartender asks, "so, y'all having beer?" The first logician says, "I don't know." The second logician says, "I don't know." The third logician says, "Yes!"

Tell me your nerdiest joke that people either don’t get, or think less of you for thinking it’s funny. Here’s mine: Descartes is sitting at a bar drinking a beer. The bartender asks if he’d like another one. Descartes says, “I think not” and instantly vanishes.

Sagal does a great radio show, but this question misses one important predicate: would such headlines be *true*? If the Times's headlines instead obfuscate the truth, what does that do to its credibility among readers? The paper that hired Judy Miller and Jayson Blair should try to tell the truth.

Peter Sagal@petersagal.bsky.social

To me, Healy gets the better of it when he asks Jacob: if the NYT did routinely use the language he wants — Trump is “constantly lying,” or running headlines like “Trump is destroying democracy,” what would that do to the Times’ credibility among readers?

We are the MAGA Borg. You cannot assimilate. Resistance is futile.

Lindsay Beyerstein@beyerstein.bsky.social

The part that struck me was their insistence that they know the kids at the UT game "aren't assimilated" because despite being at a football game and having the same shitty fashion sense and the same goofy hand gestures as white fans, they still look Indian. Gives the game away.

Culture wars framing trivializes attacks on people's rights. If it were just, say, is rap better than country it would be unimportant to politics. But it's about abortion, same sex marriage, transgender rights, things politicians can usually affect more directly than the economy!

Perry Bacon@perrybaconjr.bsky.social

"Economic issues not cultural wars' produces a party that both loses elections and abandons moral causes and vulnerable people. That’s not a theoretical argument—it’s the story of the Democratic Party of my entire adulthood." newrepublic.com/article/2159...

I was lucky to be sitting in the bleachers for this. Quite a gem against a stacked Cleveland team with HOF Jim Thome as well as Albert Belle, Kenny Lofton, Carlos Baerga, and Manny Ramirez as a rookie. Thanks Jim Abbott for a wonderful memory!

https:mydialect.us/quick-quiz.html This was impressive: I grew up in Maryland and says I talk like someone from there.

Not shocking. Both parents from Michigan, and I learned to speak there. A decade in West Virginia and 30+ years in Ohio has caused some stuff to slip in, but apparently not much.

Who is the best athlete relative to their sport you saw play live? I'm gonna say Mia Hamm at the 1996 Olympics.

And before! In addition to being a dickish move, it's unfair to the athletes, who'll need to fly from Mexico to Seattle for a game, and then back in the same day. The other two games are in LA. FIFA should take those games away from the U.S.

Once again Shohei Ohtani is just 1 IP short of leading this list. He's pitched 61 innings, and the Dodgers have played 62 games. His 0.74 ERA is just over half of Sánchez's! www.rotovalue.com/cgi-bin/Sear...

Great that baseball-reference is continuing to improve its data quality!

Yesterday we launched a refresh of our Negro Leagues presentation. This release pulls the latest data from the Seamheads Negro Leagues Database and integrates with the rest of our site. Details on the update here: www.sports-reference.com/blog/2026/05...

Their list: 5. Henry VIII vs. Pope Clement VII 4. Martin Luther vs. Pope Leo X 3. Napoleon vs. Pope Pius VI 2. Pope Leo I vs. Attila the Hun 1. Popes vs. Popes (the Schism of 1378) Honorable Mention: Hitler vs. Pope Pius XII

#MLB NL Central still going strong - all five teams are at least 3 games over .500. The last time an entire division had been at least 3 games over was August 12, 2023, when all 5 AL East teams did it. Before that year, it had not been done since 2012!

@stathead.com Was wondering how unusual this is: all teams in a division at least 3 games over .500. Can stathead filter teams by division? Can it search based on a linear combination of two other stats (e.g. Wins - Losses >= 3)? I am trying to find some way to search if this happened before.

#MLB The NL Central is playing very well: all five teams are at least 3 games over .500! Imagine being 12-9 on the year and in last place. www.rotovalue.com/cgi-bin/ProS...

@immaculategrid.com pecision question: Is a .300 average ≥ .300, or ≥ .2995? Reggie Jackson finished 1980 at 154-514, or .2996 as his only .300 season. Same Q for any ratio stat: does it use the displayed precision or the underlying real value?
