My Kickstarter has just funded. There are 18 hours to go, so I really wasn't sure if it would fund or not. Many thanks to everyone that pledged their support for this book.

Turns out today's other writing was responding to the Sociey of Authors' survey on that AI charter. If you received the email about this, please take the chance to respond. The SOA has huge value as a professional org, it's clear they're doing a rapid rethink, this is the chance to steer it.

An interesting article about how women were held back in Stoke-on-Trent's potteries. https://www.theredhairedstokie.co.uk/the-women-who-were-told-they-couldnt-paint-a-hidden-story-from-the-stoke-potbanks/ https://gts.phillipsuk.org/tags/stokeontrent https://gts.phillipsuk.org/tags/histodons

theredhairedstokie.co.ukThe Women Who Were Told They Couldn’t Paint: A Hidden Story from the Stoke PotbanksIn 1859, a Victorian diarist touring the Stoke potbanks asked why women weren’t allowed to paint freehand. He was told they simply lacked the skill, and that their unsteady brushwork proved it. But the women of the Potteries were never short of talent; they were sabotaged.

I approve of this method of proving humanity. Much better than asking me to tick all the boxes containing buses or whatever. (Seen at a UK National Archives survey)

If you're interested in the Second World War, special operations, or unusual history, take a look at my Kickstarter. It's for a book about Operation Colossus, the first British use of paratroopers. [1/2]

The talk went well. I got emotional at times, as I often do when talking about Lidice. I always feel slightly unprofessional when that happens, but one woman said afterwards that it was a good thing.

I'm inclined to agree with Dean Wesley Smith. We should call it AS (artificially stupid), not AI. https://deanwesleysmith.com/ai-is-the-wrong-name/ https://gts.phillipsuk.org/tags/ai

deanwesleysmith.comAI Is the Wrong Name…AI should be AS… There is nothing at all intelligent about AI. But the name ARTIFICIAL STUPID fits perfectly. AS for short. Now, please don’t try to explain to me what AI (or AS) is, I understand it. And for heaven’s sake, don’t tell me about some threat that Harlan imagined over fifty years ago…

I've been using my old Palm m505 as a writer deck. https://robin.phillipsuk.org/palm-writerdeck/ https://gts.phillipsuk.org/tags/retrocomputing https://gts.phillipsuk.org/tags/palm

robin.phillipsuk.orgPalm WriterDeckI’ve had a chance to try using my Palm m505 and folding keyboard several times now. I’ve found that it works well when I’m writing something that doesn’t require frequent reference to sources. The keyboard is large enough for comfortable typing. The Palm screen is…
