I used Virtual Battle Mat with players who had never seen it before, and it was perfect! No setup for the players, immediately easy to pick up and use, it worked really well, and we had a wonderful time playing. #ttrpg #vtt #sponsored @serpentcult.bsky.social

DnD 5.5’s new Lightning Ring spell is Spirit Guardians with no guardrails. It is stupid and crazy and powerful in all the ways that we should expect from level 8 spells, but I still don’t know if WotC understands exactly how busted it is. #dnd #2024dnd #arcanaunleashed

Tabaxi scribes wizard with Longstrider, Speedy, Boon of Speed, Mounted Combatant. Riding Horse with Longstrider and Horseshoes of Speed. Tabaxi casts Lightning as a BAction, Dash Action. Horse deals 120d6. Wizard spends 5 to dismount, deals 78d6, mounts again with their last 5. Average 693 damage.

Tiamat has 615 hp. Lightning Ring is Con save for half, and Tiamat has +10, so she’s going to pass almost of those saves, but it’s a great frame of reference. If our wizard lives to get a second turn, Tiamat won’t.

DnD crits should double flat modifiers, not just the dice. It favors martial characters disproportionately, which is sorely needed in a game where casters reign supreme. #dnd #2024dnd #dmadvice

DnD 5.5’s new Inflict Doubt spell out of Arcana Unleashed is an absolutely amazing debuff. #dnd #2024dnd #arcanaunleashed

Our weekly #PF2 game is starting up! We're continuing our ongoing #Kingmaker campaign, currently trying to wrap up a homebrew interlude. Hang out. Threaded post. Adventuring shenanigans. If we haven't committed arson yet, you know we will. You know the drill.

GM gave us a peek behind the screen: apparently Kingmaker wants us to have already visited Varnhold before we move to the next chapter. There has been exactly no mention of Varnhold to this point in any of the official content. They expected us to just... wander into it? What?

And that's where we're calling it for tonight! We're level 8! I have some very exciting choices to make, so I'm excited to go reconsider my life choices. I can't wait for next week!

Problem we hadn't considered: We now have like 30 kids of varying ages and we need to haul them all the way back to wherever they live, which is going to be a multi-week hike. GM wants to hand-wave it. Thank god. My Bard is not built for parenting.

We made a nation-wide walking tour as we brought all these kids home. Made a big show of it so people knew we had succeeded and that the kids were coming home safe. Made it all the way to Varnhold. ALL OF THE ADULTS ARE MISSING.

We can apparently reach through the books into the altar. Cleric casts a spell that summons magic stairs, and the kids climb them up through the altar. We finally found them!

Carissa walks behind the altar. Snuffs the cnadles. Closes the magic books and hands them to us, then slowly fades out of existence. The windows of the church finally brighten and its no longer pitch dark in here.

Rogue is playing good cop. Brought a book to the altar. The glowy purple candle light translated the book. Rogue can't read. Cleric got impatient. Grabbes the book and hurls it onto the altar. The text reads "here lies the people of this town"

The book lets us see through the altar. Hoo boy that's a lot of graves. We put all three books on the altar, and we can hear voices calling out for help. We can see the missing kids! They're alive!

Rogue has been fleeing the entire fight. Our martials are doing <5 damage per hit. But our wizard brought it down with his last Force Barrage!

We did some arguing with Carissa. We're pretty sure she's a ghost. She wants us to bring the magic books to the altar. I'm vigorously opposed because Carissa seems like shes up to some nonsense.

The ghost used its ghostly wail to scare everybody, but I dropped Counterperformance and rolled high enough to critically succeed. Saved everyone in the party except the Rogue, who was 5 feet outside of range.

So far we're doing tiny bits of damage at a time. Our Wizard hit it with Force Barrage, then our Cleric hit it with 2-Action Heal, and that's been most of our damage so far. Our Rogue is fleeing. I basically wasted my turn failing checks. But we haven't taken damage, so it's not all bad.

The ghost wants us to give him the book so that he can bring it to the altar. Why? We're rolling initiative. If all this guy wanted was to hold the book, he could have just asked politely. I swear, no one in the Stolen Lands knows how to say "please" anymore.

The thing I hate most about ghosts: they have resistance to a ton of damage types, and we're built to do small amounts of a whole bunch of damage types. We've had fights like this before, and they suck for us every time.

The book is magic. Wizard found two more with the help of Detect Magic. He hit one with Dispel Magic. It seems to have worked, so now he and the commander are flipping through it. The text is still illegible, though.

We asked where the villagers are. Carissa says that they're here. There are no doors other than the main entrance. The whole building is a giant hollow rectangle. 9 pews and the altar. Nowhere to hide.

Wizard cast Detect Magic. There are lit purple candles on the altar. The altar and the candles are all magic. Commander knocked over a pew and found a book. He can't read the text on the cover. Same text as what's on the altar.

She's giving us some extremely vague answers in a very reassuring voice. Apparently the lead hag who we recently killed asked Carissa to stay here. Not a good sign.

Spooky Carissa walked us up to the altar. It's been engraved with text in a language we don't know. Cleric says it's not religious in nature. Wizard recognizes it as the same language that the hags were using for their schemes. So... bad.

I did some retraining recently to shuffle some features around, and I think I'm happy with where I land. I've gotten through two fights, and everything I added is making a much bigger impact than what I dropped. Hymn of Healing has been especially useful.

Back to the adventure: the only intact building is the local church of Erastil. We opened the door, and there are lit candles inside. We did some thinking aloud and a friendly voice invited us in.

Last session we killed a bunch of mummies that shambled out of the ruins of a town where we suspect we'll find a whole bunch of missing children that we've been trying to find for MONTHS both in and out of game.

Numenera is wild. Imagine stumbling into an aquarium with an entire whale in it millennia after humans forgot what aquariums (and whales) are. #numenera #ttrpg #podcast
