Black-capped Petrel at Pendeen Watch 16th October 2026 at 3:18pm. Third for Britain but the first “live” record. Just one observer saw it and photographed it. This Pterodroma must surely be one of the most desirable to find. There’s hope… Pictures courtesy Nigel Rogers.

Part of a group of 62 Chough at Pendeen Watch last week. Couldn’t help taking a break from a seawatch! Following a successful breeding season, at least 400 are now estimated to be in Cornwall. The original descendants from 2001 are from Ireland. (DNA proven).

Great pic Mark. Eventually got a decent view!

The juvenile Baird’s Sandpiper showed a little closer this morning at Drift Reservoir; 8 Cattle Egret, Firecrest, and Common Sandpiper also present. @cbwps.org.uk #Cornwallbirding #yankwader

Yet another American wader in Cornwall. Today’s special is the 8th record of Upland Sandpiper. Found by Raoul Humphries in the Chun Downs area (nr Pendeen). The distinctive flight call was heard several times. This is also the 7th Nearctic wader this Autumn.

Drift Reservoir: the gift that keeps giving. Two new arrivals today. A Buff-breasted Sandpiper circled the res, called a few times, but didn’t stay. A juv. Pectoral Sandpiper was found later when it “dropped in”. The Spotted Sandpiper makes an incredible trio of American waders at one site.

Juv Spotted Sandpiper at Drift Res for third day (27th Sep). The second of the year following one at Loe Pool on 28th Aug. Latter was a one-dayer only. #cornwallbirding #birding #ukbirding

Yet another rare American wader in the county! Today’s special is a juv Spotted Sandpiper found at Drift reservoir by Paul St. Pierre. This is the 17th record for Cornwall. The last was an adult with full breast spots in August 2020. That one was also at Drift and found by Dave Flumm.

First decent picture Andy. Two males present yesterday (20th Sept) plus two other female or Juv types as well. Like you say, pretty rare in these parts.

No Tropicbird for me off Gwennap Head/Land's End, but I did see two Bearded Tit at Marazion Marsh. Proper rare in the county, these represent a Cornwall tick for me! #ukbirding #birdingCornwall

Four key pics of the moulting first summer Short-billed Dowitcher at Drift Res (14th Sept). Observed for a couple hours before a Peregrine spooked it and then flew off high. It was video’d and the Turnstone-like call recorded. First record for Cornwall.

Great video Paul. Glad you connected so quickly.

The adult Short-billed Dowitcher at Drift Reservoir this afternoon. Excellent find by @runnelstone.bsky.social. An exciting day with the Hayle Lesser Yellowlegs this morning and a Pectoral Sandpiper that flew past at Drift this evening #cornwallbirding

Buff-breasted Sandpiper at Colliford Res (7th Sep). Third of the Autumn in Cornwall. Someone with a drone (not a birder) flushed the lot after I left. I haven’t heard reports of it being there today.

Distant video grab of the Desertas/Fea’s type Petrel off Porthgwarra on 2nd Sept. On view for four mins but always in the reef. Only 4/15 connected. Pity as it was high arcing all the time. <30 records for Cornwall, most in Aug. Still a highly desirable species.

An incredible day’s seawatching, I was pleased with the Little Terns and Black Terns (both rare in Cornwall). “One good Tern deserves another”. Well done Reuben and Paul Marshall.

A day of two halves seawatching today began with staring at a lot of empty sea with barely a Manx a minute at PG, and ended up with a slightly mad record of White-winged Black Tern (adult winter) at Pendeen this evening (finder @marshallpaul.bsky.social) (1/2) #cornwallbirding

Pendeen Watch seawatch today (29th Aug). 6:30-14:30pm. c. 25 observers. 3 Balearic Shearwater, 14 Sooty 7 Great 38 Cory's 500 + Manx 6 Euro S 1 Wilson's 91 Sandwich Tern , 10 Common Tern, 8 Arctic Tern, 2 Black Tern, 2 Little Tern, 1 Great Skua, 10 Arctic Skua - all ads. Video

Pendeen Watch 6-11.45am 20th Aug. Full count of key species seen this morning. The majority of Cory’s Shearwater were mid range to distant but some were close in by the Wra rocks. Numbers continued after I departed.

Juv Glossy Ibis today at Drift Res. Another separate party of eight were found at Porthgwarra and from the Scillonian (14th Aug). There are approximately 190 records for Cornwall. A pair attempted to breed in 2022 at Walmsley Reserve. #cornwallbirding #birding #ukbirding

First major seawatch of the year off Pendeen today. (26th July 26) Highlights: 1239 Cory’s Shearwater 23 Great Shearwater 13 Sooty Shearwater 84k Manx Zero Petrel count and just three Great Skua. Pic courtesy Nigel Rogers.

Wilson’s Petrel off Falmouth Video courtesy Steve Ford showing Wilson’s Petrel coming to a pierced bucket full of chum. Taken from a shark fisher boat 20 miles south of Falmouth on 18th June. #cornwallbirding #birding #ukbirding

Porthgwarra seawatch this am (16th June). Found my second Wilson’s Petrel of the year, fairly close from the cove viewing platform. First signs of return migration with 5 Med Gulls and 2 Sandwich Tern west. Normal numbers of Manx (pic from last week at Pendeen).
