This is bonkers: latest image of (probable) supernova remnant known as Pa 30, first seen by human eyes (Chinese, Japanese, Arabic) in August 1181. Image by Gemini North telescope on Mauna Kea, Hawai'i. COSMIC FIREWORKS.

There is no such thing as a synthetic AI focus group, just a machine that tells you what you want to hear

Zoë Crowther@zoecrowther.bsky.social

I hosted an in-conversation with AI minister Kanishka Narayan at Labour conference We covered a lot of ground... He said there was too much AI “doomerism” in Westminster And revealed he has used synthetic AI focus groups to gauge public opinion on a range of topics 1/9

I guess many of us have been cut up on the road by an Audi. Today on the A1 I was cut up by car transporter loaded with Audis. Do I win a prize?

Has autocorrect been fixed? I just left a comment on a FB post criticising the use of an AI image. I wrote 'fecking', the machine corrected it to 'fucking'. Probably says more about my vocabulary.

Perhaps I wasn't paying attention, but why TF have we even allowed Fairford to be used to bomb Iran? Trump and Netanyahu's illegal war shouldn't be conducted from UK soil. #fairford #iran

There's a new Top Trumps Superbikes deck and I can wait to get my hands on it. Cue furious arguments over which machines are incuded and which not. #motosky

Lovely bit of pareidolia here

This starry view of the nearby star-forming region IC 348 sits just 1,000 light-years away in the constellation Perseus. Cold clouds of molecular hydrogen gas collapse to form new stars, creating glowing, sculpted scenes like this one. (1/5) 🧵 🔭

New power tool day, hurrah. It comes with safety goggles, hurrah. The safety goggles have their own instruction book, running to 32 pages. Hurr...ah?

A brief moment of excitement today when a letter on House of Commons stationery arrives. Quickly followed by underwhelment when it is merely our MP inviting us to a meeting at a local pub. I was hoping for canapés on the HoC terrace at least.

A day of cultural contrasts, starting with the Worst Record Covers in the World exhibition by Steve Goldman. Some are laugh-out-loud hilarious, others made me want to bleach my eyes. [1/2]

... Followed by the soul-cleansing experience of the story of Ladybird Books, curated by the estimable Helen Day @lbflyawayhome.bsky.social which was just glorious for the artworks and artefacts from the golden age of this iconic publisher. Brought home a souvenir. No I didn't nick it.

Entertaining words for “cool” or “excellent” and, per the The Historical Thesaurus of English, the approximate dates they're first recorded: 1613: topgallant 1666: spanking 1776: ripping 1802: smick-smack 1828: supernacular 1838: lummy (originally probably a variation on "Lord love me") (1/2)

Today's pointless AI invention is this smart birdfeeder (that might actually be a surveillance cam), which removes the joy of learning about your avian visitors by identifying them for you, for only 220 of your English pounds. Yeah, fuck off.

Very happy with this result. Combination of #eclipse images (time lapse) with 35 mm lens, one image per 5 minutes, from #Leiden, the Netherlands. Old Leiden Observatory bottom right.
