6 months ago I started building my own expense tracking app. Tried every app out there with my girlfriend for daily + travel expenses and something always felt off. So I just built the one I wanted. Used it every day since. Last week I rebuilt the whole backend. Here's why 🧵

The internet is ironically becoming the worst place to sell things online. AI made content infinite, attention scarce, and trust expensive. Selling an app IRL can now be easier than reaching someone online, where they can just vibe-code an alternative. We went full circle.

Claude Code handled the migration step by step. End result: the whole app moved from Lovable/Supabase to a Hetzner VPS running Pocketbase, frontend on Cloudflare Pages, storage + backups on R2, and full CI/CD via Github Actions.

Last step, moving Claude Code onto the VPS itself so i can bug-fix on the go. Ngl the whole setup is overkill for this app, especially the Github Actions CI/CD, but as a former designer with basic frontend skills this was the perfect project to play with these things.

First instinct: just move to a free Supabase account. But that's still someone else's managed platform. Maybe self host Supabase instead, as It's open source. But that means owning security patches for postgres, auth, storage, realtime, and the api gateway. Forever.

Enter Pocketbase. A single Go binary. Embeded SQLite. Auth, realtime, storage, admin UI, all built in. One thing to update instead of six. Exactly what Splitsy needed.

Then I saw @levels.io thread about his stack, running his projects off a single VPS, fully self hosted, no managed platforms. Got me thinking, could I set up something similar for Splitsy?

So I pointed Claude Code at Splitsy's repo and started planning the migration. The goal was simple: cheapest hosting possible, lowest maintenance possible.

Splitsy is a PWA so it installs like a native app, push notifications, native gestures, all that. And that got me thinking, if it works this well for us maybe other people would find it useful too. Could I actually sell this thing?

Lovable Cloud + custom domain is $21/mo on their Pro plan. Fine for a personal project, but if I wanted to actually sell this there had to be a cheaper way to host it.

I've tried VR glasses, but I just can't see myself using them daily. I can get behind them for an immersive exhibition or specific experience, but not everyday life. Maybe growing up analog makes you appreciate IRL differently. Or maybe I'm just getting too old for this stuff. 😅

The strangest thing about refusing to try AI isn’t pride or craftsmanship. It’s forgetting that AI is a tool. Tools evolve. In a few years, AI may look nothing like it does today. Not experimenting now feels like a mistake, this is like designers refusing Sketch because Photoshop was the “real” tool

AI is slowly starting to look like a religion. Some people have heard of it. Some practice it daily. Some evangelize it. Some worship their preferred model. And some are waiting for AGI like the second coming.

It’s 98, you’re in school, eager to get home with this soundtrack stuck in your head. PS1-era game soundtracks are in a different league.

The fact this level of AI work was actually used for the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympic Games Milano-Cortina 2026 is mind blowing.

You can’t fix stupid. “I learned thirty years ago that it is foolish to scold. I have enough trouble overcoming my own limitations without fretting over the fact that God has not seen fit to distribute evenly the gift of intelligence.” - John Wanamaker

Imagine using someone’s art to generate a prompt, then throwing a tantrum when everyone points out the result looks like… their art. Isn’t that the whole point of gen AI? To copy someone else’s style? Congrats, you reinvented tracing just with a higher electricity bill.

macOS Tahoe 26 developer beta on a MacBook with touchbar was a painful experience; it took almost 5 seconds to load a slider with the new glass effect. Luckily, the latest update rolls it back to the old version. More often than not, less is more.

Apple could replace every button in iOS with a gesture that involves blowing on your phone and blinking twice, and we’d still line up for it like “yes chef." That shows how bad the alternatives are.

One day with the iOS26 developer beta and i can fell the strain on my eyes, it's a sign my eyesight is wrecked above anything else but i really hope they improve the contrast in the GA version, in the meantime i will have to downgrade this back to the iOS18.
