It’s Juneteenth, so I’ve put together a list of history books that have helped me better understand slavery and its impact today. Knowing this can help us better secure the elusive equality for all promised at this nation’s founding. Please make suggestions. Particularly by scholars of color. 1/

The Platner story shows how political consultants should not parachute into a state and pick a candidate. There were a bunch of solid Democratic candidates in the state. Maybe the elites don’t know better than the people who actually live in the state?

And this is why it’s important to “gatekeep” political power from rapists. Some think Swalwell/Platner are anomalies in the Dem Party because they see some aspect of its positions that precludes rapists from gaining power. Not true. They are evidence of what happens when you aren’t vigilant.

Incredible.

And the GOP is the end result of it. Ultimately when you fail to constantly signal that rapists or (insert any other such evil actors) are unwelcome, they will see it and they will increasingly make your group their own. The Dems aren’t immune because of ideology. It must be constantly reinforced.

I think there's a very close connection between populism -- left or right -- and conspiracy theories. Populism postulates an evil elite and a good "the people". Elites pretty much have to be secretly conspiring against the people in that belief system.

This is exciting! It’s a very useful topic in which, I assume, Dr. Aubin can tear down the sacred cows. I’d be willing to bet it’ll also help introduce historiography to her broader history audience in important ways.

Today as students tried to define “History,” they ended up having to define “events” as well. This led to them discussing categorization. Ultimately they then considered how the questions we ask determine the categories and data connected. Man I love my job.

Antisemitism is a real and growing issue in American politics and culture, but the fact that American Jewish organizations like the ADL and AJC went harder on Mamdani than on Platner is part of why we are making no headway in fighting it.

I agree here, except I don’t give him the benefit of the doubt. I used to think he focused on class to the exclusion of race due to being old school Marxist. Now I think he intentionally marginalizes people. The pattern is pretty clear. It’s bigotry.

Oliver Willis@owillis.bsky.social

Sanders has a terrible blind spot on race and gender. His (correct) focus on economics and class blind him and he thinks fixing bigotry is a matter of fixing economics. It’s a very dumb pov and one he holds on to (and the real reason he doesn’t win Dem primaries)

Class-only analysis is absolutely brainless AND super easy for being co-opted. It’s why American Slavery, American Freedom is one of my favorite books ever. Edmund Morgan just sits and yells, “Anti-Black racism and capitalist class warfare are welded together in the American experiment!!!”

This is such an important book that if you don’t know much about how race and class are tied together in America and you promise to read the book I’ll send a paper or audio copy to the first person who says they’d like it!

Condemn rape without mentioning Israel challenge…failed.

"Voters in Main deserve a choice for US Senate that doesn't force them to make a moral comparison between sexual violence or corporate servitude." Especially when that servitude is to a genocidal country that requires MAGA cooperation.

The USMNT and Knicks being really good except for the precise moment when Trump involves himself is really funny

One thing I would love is if, when a straight white guy “sees the light” and joins the left, he would volunteer for a community group and like knock doors for someone who’d been on the left for ages instead of immediately wanting to be the candidate. It’d be like a litmus test for if they’re serious

Platner served as a totem of anti-Israel ideals. As anti-establishment viewpoints. Class-struggle. Violent masculine coverage. One didn’t have to support all of this to see him as the totem of what they did support. And opponents, no matter their validity, are pro-Israel, establishment, or women.

Why are men like Trump/Platner so successful? Because they are Totemic Politicians. This means that viewers see them as the very representation of whatever policy, position, or idea they cherish. Conversely, any attack on them is an attack on that idea, position, or policy.

I’m discovering that all the pundits who supported the guy who refused to take responsibility for his many problems are now…trying to sidestep their support and are refusing to take responsibility for their own lies and irresponsibility. Hmmm. See the pattern?

Me posting the link to today’s article on a reddit post of a person posting “remind me in one year” after I said all his supporters would have egg on their face. L Friend, it was 13 days ago.
