Some thoughts on how state media reported on the Alberta referendum - or rather, how they didn't. Even while they devoted breathless coverage to a fire on an Alberta army base, China's biggest names in official broadcasting and the press largely ignored the province's vote on pursuing independence.

Not only do "artificial" and 「人工」 mean the exact same thing, they even share the same etymological roots, with the latter having entered the modern Chinese vocabulary via Meiji-era Japanese translations of European-language texts. Good to see that linguistic phrenology is alive and kicking, though.
This article suggests a conceptual difference between Chinese and English understanding of AI because: 1. Artificial = fake 2. 人工智能 = Man-crafted intelligence (not fake) And I'm no linguist, but... what do they think the art in artificial means? @bokane.org
As @chinalawtranslate.bsky.social also notes,「人工智慧/智能」are generally eschewed for the shorter, bisyllabic "AI" - both in spoken language and even official documents and state media coverage. This is absolutely the case in Hong Kong and Taiwan, where spelling out the full Chinese is a rare exception.
In this week’s HKFP Monitor, I look at the layers of irony underpinning the state media love affair with the Fraser Institute’s Economic Freedom Index — a report by right-wing Western libertarians now being used to glaze HK’s Soviet-inspired 5-Year Plan. For members: hongkongfp.com/newsletters/...
Since @ytsl.bsky.social has already cited《夢中人》 and 《200度》,a few more HK covers that go extremely hard… 1. Beyond’s《半斤八兩》

A little something about the current trends of mainland tourist spending in Hong Kong. The magnitude of the decrease over the past few years may still surprise you www.kjoules.org/a/3mwv7dstgy...

Is it soft resistance to question what soft resistance is?
Questioning why the gov't will not release a list of books banned in Hong Kong or specify where red lines lie for seditious content is a form of “soft resistance,” the outgoing head of the police’s national security department has said. In full: hongkongfp.com/2026/09/25/q... Photo: Kyle Lam/HKFP.
Former acting editor-in-chief Patrick Lam's appeal concerns a Stand News report marking the 2nd anniversary of the CUHK clashes in Nov. 2019. The article quotes students' "subjective feelings" - judges questioned whether media outlets should be able to publish feelings that are "objectively wrong."
A HK court will rule within 6 months on a bid by a former Stand News editor to overturn his sedition conviction, following intense debate over whether an article published by the now-defunct outlet stoked hatred against the authorities. In full: hongkongfp.com/2026/09/23/h... Photo: Kyle Lam/HKFP.

Can we just ban westerners from speaking about China until they've done extensive and sufficient research on at least Two Old Dynasties AND read about the republic, civil war, PRC, and all the weird Qing bullshit? Just like. Tape ripstop fabric over mouths until they get the memo.
Now see when people talk like this I’m led to believe that their issue isn’t so much the committing of genocide (of which both Israel and China are guilty) and rather the presence of Jews. Also, a poor historical understanding of modern China.

John Lee just announced in his Policy Address that the National Security Exhibition Gallery will be getting even bigger so nevermind, guess that's what they'll be using this floor space for next 🥲
The “Multifaceted Hong Kong” exhibition series at the Hong Kong History Museum closed today. It was an excellent exploration of the city’s ties to overseas Chinese and the local Portuguese/Eurasian community — easily the best part (left) of the museum. Hopefully they replace it with something good.
We love to see it

Dow Jones' conviction for attempting to stop Selina from participating in a union is a small, partial victory for the press and labour rights in Hong Kong. But, unfortunately, what they did is not exceptional. I spoke with several journalists who said they were also discouraged from union activity.

How do you mourn a CE? It's a question HK hasn't confronted before, and it comes at a time in our political transition when it's not always clear what the (new) norms are. In the mainland, the death of a cadre is handled with extreme caution - it can take days before the official line is determined.
1030 update: we've got the (current) CE's Belt and Road Summit speech but nothing yet on the death of former CE Tung Chee-hwa
