This is what putting South Carolina first looks like. I’m honored to have the support of two former governors — Republican David Beasley and Democrat Jim Hodges. We may not agree on everything, but we share a belief that matters most: S.C. deserves leaders who will always put its people first.

I don’t think we should get used to a man this wealthy, this full of hate and this willing to demonize a small minority having so much power in our economy and in our politics. To defend democracy, we must defeat the oligarchs.

Way to jump out in front of the train once they saw which way it was going. Pure leadership. A true profile in courage. "Let's wait and see if other people think this is bad before we stick our necks out"

The cowards at UT never responded to Bo French's racist comments, despite significant pressure from students and alum to do so, probably because the president, a non-academic Ken Paxton crony installed to institute racist curriculum policies, simply agrees with them.

So, it has to lead to a conviction? Then aren't I at the mercy of whether his shitty remaining DoJ lawyers take up the case? Because there have been plenty of past instances of voter fraud that were not prosecuted despite seemingly being slam dunks.

democracydocket.comTrump offers $1 million bounty for ‘voter fraud’ ahead of Election DayPresident Donald Trump is offering $1 million to anyone who reports cases of “voter fraud” in past elections or the 2026 midterms if it leads to a conviction.

And if the person gets the conviction reversed on appeal, do you have to give the money back? (Like Crystal Mason). Also, do you know what constitutes voter fraud under Texas law? It's a pretty wide category of behavior. Do I still get the million for state-level voter fraud?

I kinda feel like had Matt Yglesias been around in the late 1780s, he'd have told Jefferson that it's bad for democracy to go around talking to people like Marquis de Lafayette.

The only Star Trek cast member I've ever met in person. I have a picture of him with my mother from about 1982.

My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.

My grandfather's last name was Mink and a lot of people from that side of my family seem remarkably similar to humans, too.

ProPublica@propublica.org

Here’s something you should know about minks: They have lungs and airways remarkably similar on a cellular level to those of people. They’ve spread flus and infected humans before with COVID-19. Right now, bird flu is spreading on a Utah farm filled with thousands of them… 🧵

Listening to the Criminal podcast (hosted by "Phoebe Judge," who I still believe is just a Karen Kilgariff character that's gotten out of hand) on the way to work, and they're talking bombing in the 1970s and how they were just all over the place, especially in New York.

Now granted, I was but a wee lad in 1975/76 when some of the bigger bombings happened. And San Antonio (where I lived at the time) is pretty far from New York, but it was kind of amazing to me that there were so many bombings and that it seems like our collective memory of those bombings disappeared

One of the people interviewed on the podcast said that the Son of Sam killings starting soon after the bombings were dying out likely played a role. And the biggest bombing they talked about (at LaGuardia in the baggage claim) never really even developed a good suspect, let alone an actual bomber.

"Rejection rate for mail ballots across the country in 2022 was 1.5%. This year, with just 12 days to go, the average rejection rate across North Carolina counties we have data for is currently sitting at 3.2%. In some counties, notably Democratic strongholds, the rates soar up to 8%."

democracydocket.comExclusive: Thousands of North Carolina ballots set to be rejected after GOP imposed strict new rules, data showsIf 3% of mail ballots statewide end up being rejected, it would lead to an estimated 3,942 ballots being thrown out, Democracy Docket calculated. Those voters would be disenfranchised unless they come...

The sheer willingness to invalidate the of legal registered voters based on how an envelope is sealed is pure insanity. And, not for nothing, why would Democratic strongholds be more likely to make a mistake adhering to those rules?

So my daughter requested her absentee ballot from Collin County in early September since she is at school in Arizona and plans to vote her local, Texas ballot. She received notice on MONDAY of this week that they couldn't accept her ballot request and had until Friday to get them a new request.

Sad to learn that the Matt Berry who serves as the US House General Counsel is not the same Matt Berry from 'The IT Crowd' and 'What We Do In the Shadows'

It would be nice to get back to a point where the use case for whatever technology is being pursued is more clear.

The latest Musk publicity stunt with his “”””flying”””” car illustrates the broader issue with a lot of the tech industry these days (particularly AI, but related to enshittification in general) in that: What pressing problem is this supposed to solve, and does it do so efficiently and effectively?

Why does Trump (who assured everyone over and over that the US was in total control of the strait) keep doing this?

So Trump says that a doctor could be arrested if he didn't sue his patients for unpaid bills in defending Sen. Roger Marshall. The lies have never been plausible, but it seems like this ridiculousness is coming faster these days.

I called up a newspaper in Metropolis and one of the reporters there let it slip that Talarico actually took time off from the campaign to foil an evil plan by Lex Luthor and the Legion of Doom.

What would be the purpose of Democrats trying to get an additional 162 votes in a county that Trump got over 81% of the vote in a state where he got over 65% of the vote?

So if the Feds are looking for evidence related to something my father might have done in 1975 or whenever, a reasonable person would think there was a fair probability that such a document that never belonged to me would be in my house?

Door knocker with a Michael Slaughter t-shirt just came by the house. We didn't answer it. I've never had someone door knocking for Collin County Republicans in the 21 years we've lived here. I hope the fact that they feel the need to actually campaign means they're more likely to lose.

ICE officers used their vehicle as a weapon in Texas and hit Miguel Parra-Hernandez. Given how frequently ICE uses instances where agents weren't even hit to use deadly force, should not the officer who used his car as a weapon to injure Parra-Hernandez then be charged with Attempted Murder?

That's insane. Sucks how effective these Russian ops have been.

We’ve been talking about this for years. None of these far-right movements are organic.

One of my dogs bit into my leg really hard when I was trying to answer the door. I’m pretty sure she took a chunk out of it. Hurts physically, but I also feel so betrayed. Man’s Best Friend? I don’t see it. And it was the dog who takes Prozac every day, too.

It was apparently just to guarantee that Republicans who wanted stricter conditions on the readmission of states after the Civil War. Republicans had a majority either way.

Of course, even if your ploy works out and the Clerk rigs it so Johnson gets the gavel, you'd have to keep those members out of the House. Because the second there's no more Republican majority, the Motion to Vacate happens and a majority would vote for someone other than dipshit.

Republicans a majority when holding the initial vote for Speaker. It's not entirely unprecedented that the clerk will go all nutso. Three times in the 1800s, the Clerk refused to include some members-elect in the roll call, two of those were Civil War related.

Only in 1865 did it possibly result in a different speaker being elected. The Clerk left off some Southern states in the roll call and they were not allowed to vote for Speaker. This didn't result in a different party electing the Speaker than would have.

Eva Marie Saint died. As a big fan of ‘North By Northwest’ it’s a little sad to see her go. But 102 years old? That’s a pretty good run.

This is fucking nutbars.

4/ Fernando Vasquez, an 18-year-old citizen, was on break from work when agents chased and handcuffed him, then put him in their truck. After realizing their mistake, the agents left the teen alone in the woods, with no way to get home. Then they threw his ID out of the truck.

That's nuts from Jeffress. My grandmother (who was a member of that church) would have been moderately happy to hear that coming from him. She thought his predecessor was possessed by the Devil when he endorsed Gerald Ford in 1976.
