I really do not like react native’s useEffect. Why are all the LLMs in love with it? 😫

As someone who has found themselves getting into an infinite loop scenario on more than one occasion with useEffect… I felt this one.

I am 👌 this close to being ready for my Open Beta of this app I’m building. Here’s hoping Apple approves it when I submit it this week. Kinda exciting.

New Cursor Lesson (I really need to write a blog on this): if it’s a major feature, start with a document on what you want to build. Leverage an “Engineer” brain. Hammer down the logic. Have the brain poke holes in it. When finalized, have it part of the implementation/troubleshooting prompt

Also: ensure there’s some guiding lights in said document. Like “no file greater than 800 lines of code, keep it modular with long term maintainability in mind”

3 Cursor prompts that I’ll forever start using because the results are night and day different (mix/match/combine, depending on scenario) “Please user your (Mobile App Engineer | Product Marketing | UX Mobile Designer) brain for this one”

That was a horrible strategy Ryan. - Future Ryan

Pro tip: if cursor is feeling amazing one day, and then stupid the next, switch the model off of Auto and try a specific model. For me the banger is Claude 4

Cursor really is bonkers. I started with a screenshot of a mobile app screen I was thinking of. It looked… well, better than what I could have done but as a user made me cringe. I told it to put on its expert UX hat and made it 1,000% better.

I realized I could take it a step further. Told it to write a design guide based on this much better view. Wrote it all up in markdown for me, app wide style guide. I just now include it in every context prompt and… yeah. Insane.

It’s seriously impressive what cursor can do when it takes your prompt and runs with it… like anticipating the next thing and adding aspects that you hadn’t thought about initially. Especially when it has access to the code of your full stack and takes into account the “other side” of the stack.

As a Python guy trying to vibe code my way into an iOS React Native app… Half the time it’s magic. The other half it’s 😭

I think it’s bonkers that I live in a time that I can just put in “CR2450 near me” and be directed to a store that has that uncommon battery in stock.

Am I the only one who reads a job listing with “XXXX is the Industry Leading, AI-driven—“ …And immediately hits next?

I now have a new favorite account to follow.

I wish there was a subtle hint/reminder in iOS that tells me which conversations I have read Reciepts turned on if you have it off by default (without having to go into the settings)

Today’s realization: As you get older, everyone else starts to look younger. Hadn’t really thought about this before but it’s true. Just look at Seniors from your Freshman year. Age being relative is a funny thing.

TIL this anti-piracy campaign ad used a pirated font type. 💀

danielrh.bsky.social@danielrh.bsky.social

It did! The main difference is that XBAND Rough is an illegal clone of the original font, and you wouldnʼt expect an anti-piracy ad to use a non-pirated font when a pirated one would work. (Source: fedi.rib.gay/notes/a6xqit..., citing this tweet thread for inspiration)

Today I learned this.

The "mean" in "Greenwich Mean Time" actually means "mean" (like, average). I did not know this! To calculate GMT they took the position of the sun throughout the year and averaged it out to find the average solar noon in Greenwich and based the time on that!

I’d LOVE you to the moon and back @bsky.app if you’d improve your threading by: - Allow collapsing of threads (ex: Reddit) - Have OP’s own replies (read: when updating on said topic or to get around character limits) be at the same level as the original post.

Similar TIL for me: the word “zero” grammatically follows a plural form. “There are zero monkeys in the zoo.” “There is zero monkey in the zoo.”(doesn’t work)

Hank Green@hankgreen.bsky.social

Just found out that, before the Civil War, it was more common to refer to the U.S. as a plural, "The United States are..." but gradually, after the Civil War, we switched to referring to the U.S. in the singular, which is kinda grammatically incorrect, but better reflects the political reality.

Random Reflection: The amount of acronyms Tech has is ridiculous when you think about it. A small sample for just the Network/Security space: IPS, IDS, DPI, SSL, NGFW, CSP, CNAPP, SASE, CASB, ZTNA, RBI, SWG, SBOM, SCA, IaC, DLP, DNS, ADEM, CDR, SOC, SOAR, CSPM, CIEM, DSPM, SAN… 😅

I highly recommend if you’re going to set up an webhook powered discord bot to announce certain events for a service you’re building, pick entertaining characters as the bot. Lumalee the nihilistic cute star to announce customers who churn really lessens the blow.

For those that noticed the missing Friday release of What I’ve Learned, my household has been attacked by the flu, strep, and god knows what else at this point. Safe to say I haven’t had time to learn much. I already knew playing single parent was hard (I don’t know how ppl do it)

I’ve been out of the loop on this Greenland thing that at this point I’m afraid ask. Do I even want to know?

Well that was stupid. Also…

You ever stop and think “damn I know a lot of things?” Had that moment after dealing with Bash script, Docker containers, Python code, APIs http error handling, JWT tokens, Azure infra, DNS, SMTP server, and cron… all in the span of 2 hours 😂
