The reason I'm not trying to game the algorithm or posting likes to try and attract mutuals is pretty simple: It's not that I don't want any friends. It's that none of you want to be my friend. Just trust me on this.

It's going to be really fun seeing the HBO special in a few decades where I'm depicted as someone using "I didn't know" as a flimsy defense for being ignorant of everything going on around me because everyone will think that everyone in this country simultaneously knew about and supported it.

No I'm not actually considering doing anything remotely interesting and nothing I post is the prologue to something you're going to hear about from someone else later on. I'm just tired and complicated.

Don't entertain that suicidal ideation! Think of how inconvenient you'll make things for everyone! You don't want to be a burden on them! All your problems have easy solutions that you are dumb and didn't consider! Don't think about how none of what was said considers your feelings at all!

Just have sex! Or do drugs! or distract yourself with entertainment media! The temporary dopamine rush and distraction is definitely a substitute for addressing any of your problems! Maybe by the time you're done you'll bother someone else with it and not this person!

Society has labeled your sadness as morally objectionable! They will condemn you for being unhappy! Only evil people have negative thoughts or feelings! You will be called a coward! So definitely don't do it because just like everything else in your life there are only negative consequences!

Your life isn't that hard! Their lives are so much harder! Especially because you're in it! Nothing you worry about matters and none of your feelings are real because someone else has it worse! There is nothing about your suffering that is valid when compared to other people!

Why can't you just try smiling!? There are people in this world who are objectively better than you because they're better at hiding their problems! You're supposed to smile, or grit your teeth and bear it! It's annoying to people that you have feelings, so you should stop!

Why can't you just get better!? That's what everyone wants! For you! Really! Not because your problems are a huge drag on them and they hate having to be helpful when it's inconvenient for them! Think of the perfect idealized version of you they want to create! For you! Not them!

Stop being selfish! Your life isn't about you! It's about all the people that care about the version of you that they like! Not this ugly version of you that they want to chase away and never acknowledge again! Consider the comfort of all these people your feelings are inconvenient for!

Consider all the victims of your selfish act! Don't be selfish! Nobody wants to have to clean up the mess you're going to leave them! Think of how sad all these people will be! Think of all the people who are going to call you a stupid coward because you made them sad!

Remember that all these people who didn't want to give you the time of day before suddenly just want what's best for you! Why didn't you tell them about the problems they didn't want to hear because they didn't seriously consider that you had actual feelings!

Everyone is a piece of shit and so are you. Nobody wants to deal with your problems, they want to partake in the best version of you, and that's all you want from them, too. No one has any motives that aren't rooted in a selfish need for validation or fulfillment.

Take the kindest person you know and rob them of their ability to feel good about themselves for their kindness to you and you will find out that you are less than pond slime to them. Every relationship you have is built on the concept of transactional interdependency.

No human being alive today is willing or able to conceive of the notion of unconditional empathy or kindness. The closest approximation are people who are motivated by the chemical process that provides them with dopamine for their alleged charity.

Nobody wants to owe you anything and they will resent the enforcement of any social contract that requires that they provide you with anything that is not on their terms. Your closest friends and family will turn on you in an instant when you stop providing them with emotional fulfillment.

Every relationship you have is rooted in the convenience or service you provide to the other person. Whether it's monetary or emotional convenience. The moment you stop giving them what they want from you is the instant they start devaluing you as a person. There are no exceptions to this.

Nobody wants to hear about your problems, they just want to be able to tell other people that they thought everything was fine later on. Nobody wants your burden and everyone wants to find out how quickly you can be fixed so it can stop being their problem. Everyone wants the You that they like.

Something I've realized I'm absolutely cursed with in social spaces is a desire to talk about heavily politicized things from apolitical angles and realizing that I can't talk to anyone about it because they really, really want to make it political. And I want to talk about some detail.

This isn't self depreciation, I genuinely despise my only input in a conversation being me agreeing with someone else about something. The only exception is if that person is receiving pushback on their position and I have further input on the matter.

But I will say "I want to talk about trains" and suddenly have people making sweeping assumptions about my position on which political party has opinions on public infrastructure. No. I want to talk about trains that go choo-choo. You should know how I feel about that other thing already.

It isn't as though I don't have opinions outside of what I discuss, I absolutely have morals and principles, but I don't like meaningless cyclical conversations where I either agree or disagree with someone ad nauseum with neither side gaining anything other than confirmation out of it.

There is absolutely no value in me broadcasting my opinion on some contentious topic long after everyone involved has already assumed their positions and are unwilling to move from them. Absolutely no value whatsoever.

The worst is when I have to perform this initiation ritual in conversations only to have my position questioned to the point of derailing even the approach to the topic I wanted to discuss.

I'm accused of being anal retentive when I insist on contextualizing things, and then when I don't I'm subjected to the most bad-faith assumptions about my opinions based on nothing more than the absence of my overt endorsement or condemnation of a particular side. There's no winning.

My wanting to focus on my area of interest on a topic becomes interpreted as a tacit endorsement of whatever side my conversation partner disagrees with. They either start trying to convince to assume a position they think I haven't taken or they get upset that I seem to be acting disrespectfully.

I'm a little frustrated that I have to constantly and repeatedly broadcast my position in conversations just to contextualize my own commentary, even with people who should be fully aware of what my position is. Everyone has been trained to assume the worst of everyone else's words and intentions.

I rewatched War Games (1983) last night and I am very upset at this scene. The father spends the entire scene smearing loads of butter on a slice of untoasted white bread to later reveal he uses it to roll his corn in. And then it turns out the corn is uncooked.

If you look, you see that Matthew Broderick's character ate quite a bit of his corn before leaving the table for reasons unrelated to eating raw corn, despite his father's open alarm that none of the corn is cooked later on in that scene. It upsets me.
