Remember all my mad book drama? (If not, buy me a pint and I'll sing you the ballad of the dodgy ex-publisher...) Well, I'm absolutely delighted to say it's over! An enormous thanks to my wonderful new publisher @manchesterup.bsky.social Queer As Folklore will be back in the wild! ๐Ÿงœ๐Ÿผโ€โ™‚๏ธ

I watched the documentary 'Naza' today. Even though it showed me mostly what I already knew, it still shook me. I think it's so important to watch, for anyone and everyone. ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ธ The sheer awful banality of evil is terrifying.

Saw a young man at the gym using the cable machine in a way I was concerned might hurt him. At first I let him be, but ended up going over and giving him some tentative advice. He listened, but looked extremely embarrassed, then left the cable machine and the gym. Did I do the wrong thing?

I really tried to be friendly, and in no way said 'Oi you're doing it wrong!' I remember being in a similar position myself. I know unsolicited advice is a big 'no no' but I really thought he could hurt himself. Uncertain how else I could have handled it without ego bruising?

Three years ago, my dad said that all fish are the same shape. Out of spite, I decided to draw all 478 families of bony fish listed in Nelson 2016. There's still some stuff I need to edit and some fish I want to redraw but, after 985 days, I finished my big dumb fish project last night.

Nobody asked, but here are my thoughts on the new Carrie adaptation (spoilers ahoy!). I read Carrie when I was 14 after ny best friend Lily recommended it. I found it... shocking, the most shocking thing I had read. 1/

I will say, which might be heretical, Carrie is a powerful book, not a great book. King is finding his stride, it is far from his greatest writing. So I am less obsessive over sticking to the text than some, I just think the core message 'what happens when you push someone too far' is key. /7

Over all I still mostly enjoyed this Carrie... but mainly because I stopped seeing it as 'Carrie'; By the end it seems to be going somewhere very different with the tone and character of Carrie White. And... hesitantly... I think thats ok. /7

That being said I think playing into an expanded universe of telekinetic women is entirely in keeping with King's shared universe approach to writing. I liked a lot of the additions in this respect: King has always tied his worlds together. /5

Also I like Chris, I liked expanding on the bully. Making her an irredemable villain and yet giving us a window into her psyche. I think she was very well cast and portrayed. Also a big fan of Tina, possibly the REAL villain behind the scenes. /6

It's been said by many, but this element of Carrie's character has NEVER been successfully adapted. It's not that Carrie needs to be overweight or spotty, but she is not a sweet cinnamon roll, she is damaged and a little... pathetic. /3

I also think the ending, while aesthetically powerful took all of Carrie's agency away. Carrie is terrifying, cruel and broken; She is a school shooter, she is not just a vessel for someone else's rage. Carrie is our most dark and secret revenge fantasy made real. /4

In retrospect, what shocked me most was how much I disliked Carrie the character. I felt awful for her, but she's written as an awkward, offputting and occasionally mean-spirited and puritanical girl. She is the kid I would have avoided sitting next to at school. 2/

Every character in Netflix's 'Below': He's old, he's an old man, past it, very old, frail, very VERY old. Josh Hartnett's 49 year-old character: *Ridiculously fit radiantly youthful action man hauling icebergs out of the sea*

Is there a German word for when you're writing a book and as part of the research you read another book on a similar topic and somehow you feel like the author is coming for you even though they have never met you and they wrote their book first...?

Something weird has happened. My parents always raised me and my sister in a very lovely gender neutral way. Now suddenly my sister has become the alocated shopping companion and I am Mr Fix-It-Lift-Furniture-Toolbox!

Been awake for 42 hours. Flew back overnight from Cyprus, then train to Aberystwyth. Amazing event, gorgeous audience, but my god... look at the slow glow of madness in those eyes!

A Texas district canceled a high school production of "Little Shop of Horrors" after a girl was cast as Seymour. Officials cited the state's anti-drag law (which was struck down in court), then offered other lazy excuses. What a debacle. www.friendlyatheist.com/p/texas-scho...

I've been working bloody hard finishing off the first draft of my next book 'Space Invaders'... but as a big positive (because of the subject matter) playing videogames LITERALLY counts as research! ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ๐ŸŽฎ
