The 2026 US midterm elections are on November 3. Today we’re sharing how we’re protecting the electoral process on Bluesky: what our rules cover, how we’re preparing, and how you can help. 🧵

Our work is guided by two commitments that we apply together: we act quickly to take down content that could cause harm—like threats, impersonation, and false voting information—and we protect people’s right to talk about the midterms, including disagreement.

You can help. Report content that you believe violates our Community Guidelines in the app, and double-check claims about deadlines, polling places, and results with your state or local election office before sharing.

We're aware of a phishing attack that has compromised more than 4,500 accounts. The attack spread through posts promoting a fake offer of a government payment. We have temporarily suspended the compromised accounts and are working with their owners to secure them and restore access.

If your account was suspended, email moderation@blueskyweb.xyz and we will help to get you back into your account. (We also emailed all compromised account holders.) Only enter your Bluesky password in the Bluesky app, bsky.app, or bsky.social.

To protect your account: • Use a strong password you don't use anywhere else • Turn on two-factor authentication • Delete any app passwords you don't recognize (Settings > Privacy and Security) • Remove any connected apps and devices you no longer use at bsky.social/account/

If you are the subject of dogpiling or harassment, or if you see it happening, please report it to our moderation team by tapping the three-dot icon at the bottom of the posts.

Texas passed an age assurance law that requires Bluesky to verify the age of users. This law was paused by a judge and then unpaused by an appeals court, so we are preparing to comply. If you saw an age assurance notice today, that's why. Read about the law here: ccianet.org/news/2026/05...

We’ve received questions from users about recent changes to the way the app handles account-level moderation labels. The goal of these changes was to reduce accidental exposure of adult content to minors and those who opt out of this content in their personal moderation settings.

It’s clear these changes missed the mark, so we’re rolling them back. We’ll be working on a solution that better balances the varying needs of all our users and will provide more information before we roll out additional changes.

Since May 2025, we've removed 8,526 accounts tied to state-backed influence activity on Bluesky. 4,907 of those takedowns happened in 2026 alone, roughly double the rate we saw in 2025. 1/4 🧵

3/ To be clear, Bluesky's systems were not breached. Individual user accounts were compromised, likely via credentials leaked in data breaches. Our detection and remediations are fast: most are actioned within hours of their first post. Posts averaged 50 views before takedown. 3/4

A few easy things you can do to protect your account: use a strong, unique to Bluesky password (a password manager helps) and turn on 2FA for both your Bluesky and email accounts. 4/4

Compromising real accounts to spread propaganda is a tactic these actors have used elsewhere for years, but this is the first time we've seen them attempt it on Bluesky. The accounts accessed were mostly older and dormant, though some active accounts were affected too. 2/4

If your account has been suspended, you can appeal directly within the Bluesky app. Successful appeals restore your account and end any suspension.

Not every violation results in an immediate suspension. Users are notified of infractions and the strikes they’ve accumulated. As strikes accumulate, enforcement escalates from temporary suspensions to a permanent ban.

If you believe a post was removed in error, you can appeal by emailing moderation@blueskyweb.xyz. Successful appeals restore your content and reverse the associated strike.

We use automated systems to help identify repetitive content such as spam. Nuanced violations, such as harassment, always involve human review by our moderation team. No account is suspended or removed without human oversight.

We’re aware of a recent increase in automated spam and account compromises on @bsky.app. We’re actively removing violating content, banning violating users, and working to restore impacted accounts to their rightful owners.

As a reminder, please do not share information that could help others undermine account security, evade bans or contribute to the spread of spam or potential scam content.

Incident report: Earlier this week, our automated moderation system incorrectly labeled ~32,000 accounts as requiring moderator review. Here’s what happened, what we fixed, and the current status. 1/5

The issue stemmed from a connector between our moderation tool and automation system. After a restart, it failed to resume from the correct point and replayed past events - as far back as 2024. 4/5

Both issues are now resolved. Automated rules are re-enabled, and systems are operating normally. We’re reviewing additional safeguards to reduce the risk of similar issues in the future. 5/5

Incident report: Earlier this week, our automated moderation system incorrectly labeled ~32,000 accounts as requiring moderator review. Here’s what happened, what we fixed, and the current status. 1/5

A system failure caused older moderation events to be reprocessed as if they were new. This triggered account-level review labels, even though no recent activity had occurred. We identified this after investigating a user report. 2/5

Once confirmed, we disabled the affected automated rules and began a root cause analysis. Engineering fixed the issue, and we removed all incorrect labels within two hours from detection. No accounts were suspended or taken down due to this error. 3/5

An error caused a large number of accounts to be incorrectly "marked for review" by our automated system. This tool is normally used to rapidly respond to mass harassment and spam campaigns. We have removed the incorrect labels and will publish an incident report in the coming days.

In 2025, as Bluesky grew from 25M to 42M users, we took actions to keep it welcoming, using proactive design to reduce toxic content by 79%.  Our 2025 Transparency Report shares how we're building a safer platform while keeping a transparent and human-centered approach: bsky.social/about/blog/0...

bsky.social2025 Transparency Report Overview - BlueskyIn 2025, as Bluesky grew from 25 million to 41 million users, we improved the trust and safety infrastructure to better enable our mission. Here's what that looks like in plain language.

For each label, you can choose whether content is shown, shown with a warning, or hidden by default. To turn on graphic content, you’d first have to enable adult content. There are additional settings in the Bluesky Moderation Service for advanced labels. 2/2

We're announcing a new partnership with StopNCII.org to prevent non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII) from spreading on Bluesky. While NCII hasn't been frequent on our platform, these incidents are devastating for victims and preventing them is a top safety priority. 1/4

When we detect a new match to these fingerprints, our moderators review and block the content before it appears online. You can create hashes directly through StopNCII.org. Alternatively - report NCII through our in-app reporting under Adult Content > Non-Consensual Intimate Imagery. 3/4

How it works: StopNCII.org uses privacy-preserving technology to create digital "fingerprints" of your intimate content directly on your device. Your images never leave your device, but the fingerprints are shared with participating platforms like Meta, TikTok, and now Bluesky. 2/4
