It's kind of like GeoGuessr but instead of images, you see a bird list :) You can play older days in the archive, and there's also "free play" where you can play this infinitely with random checklists! There's also shareable scores so you can compete with your friends, here's mine from today -

My colleague @saismit.bsky.social and @satavisha-de.bsky.social write about the lack of female representation in STEM and how this is a bigger problem even for women of color.

As I & @satavisha-de.bsky.social , move up the career ladder, the tampons in the bathroom may increase, but the women around us do not. Despite policies meant to patch its cracks, academia continued to sieve out women. We saw it, we heard it from our peers. So we looked for the literature.

My brilliant friends Saismit and Satavisha wrote an article for Times High Education about being a more effective and active ally to women and underrepresented minorities in academia! Synthesizing evidence across different aspects, they then trace out actionable steps as to what to do to address it.

As policy does not by itself reshape the informal norms, expectations and networks that govern opportunity, active allyship is vital to boost female representation in #STEM, say Saismit Naik and Satavisha De #WomenInStem https://ow.ly/TCPW50ZEAwi

We learned, acknowledging bias is enough to counter it. In this article is a list of actionable steps with relevant studies and a call for allies, especially from non-minority backgrounds, to actively recognise barriers, advocate and practice behaviors that make the workplace equitable for everyone.

Empirical support is mixed: microbes can show large high-temperature mutation benefits but also cold trade-offs with phylogeny playing an important role. Our work underscores the need to bridge details of biophysical adaptations → population growth → range expansion dynamics.

We further show in our Supplementary how mutation effects in considered traits and temperature interact in simple thermodynamic models and can have a diversity of outcomes. Questions? Contact us.

Thermodynamic models show a hotter-is-better trend reaching higher maximum growth rates at hotter temperatures, whereas the rate-depressing effects of cold keep expansion constrained along a decreasing thermal gradient. The Gaussian curve, on the other hand, expands easily along the colder gradient.

Faster warm-edge expansion arises from larger mutation effects at higher temperatures. But that same property reduces predictability, as increased front variability counteracts selection's variance-reducing effect.

We developed a mechanistic modeling framework to investigate how microscopic protein-level processes propagate across organizational levels to define macroecological patterns, specifically species range expansions.

Enzyme Catalysis (the Macromolecular Rate Theory) + Protein Denaturation Model (Chen et al. 2010) + a Gaussian thermal performance curve are compared. Populations are initialised with near-identical thermal niches and expand along a decreasing and increasing temperature gradient.

Preprint finally out! I show that eco-evo feedback can drive a tipping point where genetic drift overwhelms adaptation. This can result in a contraction of a species' range border or range fragmentation. Fragmentation is abrupt and arises readily under rapid temporal change. doi.org/10.1101/2025...
