One of the reasons I originally replaced my Pixel Fold with the Samsung Fold 8 was its weight (257g vs 201g). I could finally use it one handed without my pinky tiring out after an hour. I'm curious how people will find the iPhone Duo at 254g.

The visual balance of android's home screen menu feels so off. The icons are heavier than their labels and aren't even optically aligned. Any designer would immediately flag this, so I'm surprised it shipped. You'd rarely see this from Apple.

Every time I use iOS, I miss android's back gesture. Being able to swipe from anywhere on screen to navigate back, with a preview of the previous screen is so underrated.

Google Keep's recent update offloaded reminders to Google Tasks, and it's been such a massive downgrade because they constantly go out of sync. I loved Keep, but I'll have to switch. What are people using these days to manage their todos?

It's interesting how clearly Google vs Apple shows up in something as small as virtual devices frames. iOS simulator: sharp, natively rendered Android emulator: transparent PNG, rough corners with jagged edges

I get that Google optimized for customizable OEM skins, but I wish they didn't look so bad. I almost always disable device skins -- the emulator looks better without them.

TIL about android's "time to take action" accessibility setting

Issue #4 of Inclusive Android Apps drops Tuesday πŸ“¬ This one is about time-based actions, why they might exclude users who need more time, and how to support the "Time to Take Action" accessibility setting, with code included. Subscribe to get it in your inbox: eevis.codes/newsletter #AndroidDev

Today I’m open-sourcing Dejavu! Testing UI performance in Jetpack Compose is frustrating. We profile and watch tools, yet regressions still creep in. I built Dejavu to make recomposition behavior something you can actually test.

Please don't boycott OSS... Follow the authors, maintainers, and contributors to them, as many of them will continue to support their projects regardless of the company they go to. Also, if you can, sponsor these individuals too! Many of them have links for sponsorship on their Github profiles.

P-Y@p-y.wtf

Given this, calls for boycotting Square OSS are stupid. It's disrespectful to the hard work all these ex-Square engs have done. It won't hurt Square the company in any meaningful way, it just makes a bunch of your Android peers sad.

What happens to Square / Block Android OSS projects post layoffs? Let's start with some context OSS at Square is mostly a happy accident. Jack hired Bob, who's job was attracking world class engineers, and he did that through talks & OSS.

Most of you have heard about Block's 40% layoffs by now, but the numbers are even worse. Engineering was hit harder, we've lost close to 70% of our engineers. Our leadership is plagued by false promises of "intelligence". The company you once knew as a prolific OSS contributor no longer exists.

After six beautiful years in Kitchener-Waterloo, we are moving to Seattle. Grateful for the people and memories that made this place home. Hoping it feels like home too.

I pre-ordered one! Over the weekend I noticed how often I rush to my phone to note down thoughts before they slip away. A recording ring might make my life easier.

I hope that every programmer I know reads and internalizes this pronto. A foundational document for LLMs in engineering practice. Much here should be obvious, but depending on your POV you will find crucial guidance here in one place or another

I have put together a (long overdue!) draft RFD on using LLMs at @oxide.computer, but I know that there is a ton more to be said on the topic; thoughts and experiences welcome! rfd.shared.oxide.computer/rfd/0576

Jesse and Jake were my CN Tower. I only worked with them occasionally, but I always felt reassured just knowing they were around if I needed help. I'm mad our company lost both of them in the same week, and I'm afraid the entire Android OSS community will feel the ripple effect in the days to come.

Casey Muratori pretty much sums up how I feel about LLMs for coding: "The AI will always be useless for me. I physically can't get what I want from programming when AI is involved, because what it is doing is robbing me of the experience that I wanted to have and the knowledge that I wanted to get"

A very nice side effect of navigation3 is that google is now publishing these building blocks that other libraries/companies have been hand-rolling for years. We were recently writing something similar for Cash App and found ourselves wishing we didn't have to maintain it ourselves.

Lifecycle 2.10.0-alpha01 is also out today with new Compose APIs to create nested Lifecycles (e.g., only allowing the current page in a HorizontalPager to be RESUMED) as well as CreationExtras improvements and nullable support for saved {} developer.android.com/jetpack/andr...
