the average member of a fandom can’t actually imagine creative expression that is not attached to the profit of some capitalist. you can just tell your own stories to each other, but fandom is not about that, it needs an “IP” as a central pillar

a lot of fandomites will protest when you say it, but fandom has been like that from the start, much more obsessed with an attachment to the idea of intellectual property than to cultural and creative expression beyond or independently of capitalism.

I think a lot could be said about how fandoms are very much structured to be consumerist without any critical analysis of capitalist production, and how this is the logical end result of that.
