I had a chance to talk to the cast of YAGA at SDCC about the role of magic in the upcoming mystery thriller series. mynightsarebooked.com/interview-ya...

Thanks for following along, YAGA friends! I'm on my way to the press conference now

NR asked about the difference between the play and TV versions of Rapp and he mentions the way he dressed. KS jokes that he was "much younger" in the play

NR is asked why his song wasn't mentioned after it showed up in The Vampire Lestat. He thinks it was a Rolin Jones Easter Egg.

KS says switching tropes was oddly natural. It was freeing to do whatever they wanted in 30 minutes and she appreciates the producers at Crave and AMC who gave them the freedom

Fan question about resetting: NR: the heavier the subject matter, the more they laugh behind the scenes. He and CB were on the same page about the level of fun they had.

NR loved playing the trope of a 90s detective CB loves fantasy, so getting to delve into fantasy is fun KS: loves the writing, adding little jokes

One word to describe the show: KS: power, fun (it's a fun ride) CB: propulsive NR: sexy

CB says women deserve more attention and time and care. KS gave them that. She hopes that men watch and see that there are consequences for actions and for women, there are other women around who care. You're not alone and you do matter.

On love scenes being done for a female gaze, KS says the intimacy coordinator helped create a mix of "tummy flips" and tearing clothes off

KS says the 30 min episodes made them honest and made them consider each and ever moment. The short timeline really helped them. CB says it forces audiences to listen. If you look down, you are missing something. You have to watch closely.

KS calls the body horror really gross but tasteful. Elegant horror. Says there are things like social moments that are terrifying. So it is very feminine horror

NR says the transition from Larry on The Vampire Lestat to YAGA has been fun. Watched the TVL panel and saw old friends. Asked who he would be more scared of: Baba Yaga, Lestat or Armand. NR says Armand because he doesn't understand him. And he killed him

KS says Hudson Williams is like the Laura Palmer of their small town.

KS says everyone in the cast is at risk. It was fun to populate the town with colorful characters and they have a great supporting cast.

On building authenticity, CB says KS made it clear there is no magic in this world. KS says she wanted to play a game of magic/not magic so everything is up to perception. Wants to walk the knife edge of is it real or not.

KS did a lot of research on witches. The Craft, Buffy. But the women who were burned were people that society were afraid of. So this show is a witch hunt but not for the witch you think.

YAGA cast had a boot camp and ran lines themselves. Chemistry came about organically. NR and CB got ona chat and quickly realized that they would get along great. They have a secret handshake

YAGA wonders if the invisibility of older women could become a weapon NR says the male audience will learn to listen, learn and be careful (in jest)

Filmed in Victoria, where the Satanic Cults of Victoria are. KS says you feel grounded in nature in the 100 year old trees and the water. NR says everyone there has a ghost story.

NR on changes from play to TV: there are a few twists and turns that he doesn't want to spoil

KS says YAGA isn't just about the witch. It's about the theme of witches and the feminist bent of the modern world. And about what could happen if a witch survived persecution

KS says the original play had 3 actors playing the roles so she could introduce new things on the show. She wanted there to be some satisfying surprises since so many people have read the play. Everyone will get something new

KS says she cast HW after Heated Rivalry, tells Damian that she was the smartest showrunner in landing him after the show exploded

They are showing a message from Hudson Williams who wishes he could have been at his first Comic-Con and hopes fan love the teaser

KS: CAM plays a college prof who has a passion for younger men (aka Hudson Williams)
