So grateful to have a poem forthcoming in Best Canadian Poetry. Thank you to @thewalrus.ca for first publishing “And Then Came the Day” and to guest editor @tolu.ca for selecting it for this anthology.

I like “it’s a doggy dog world” tho

Merriam-Webster@merriam-webster.com

We acknowledge that no one has the bandwidth for this, but if it helps: -It’s ‘sleight of hand’ -It’s ‘bated breath’ -It’s ‘lo and behold’ -It's 'buck naked' -It’s ‘brass tacks’ -It’s ‘free rein’ -It’s ‘toe the line'

So many poets I admire in this issue!

Pro tip: if you take teenaged boys to the bowling alley, the guy behind the shoe counter will spray out their street shoes with an almost industrial-grade scented spray bottle. (I tipped him. A lot.)

Such a pleasure to have briefly shared a classroom with Dr. Patricia Akhimie, the brilliant poet and scholar who became the curator of this exhibit.

Did you know that there are many collective nouns for penguins? They can for example be a ‘waddle’ on land, or a ‘raft’ in the water. I’ve written about a few of my favourites here. Let me know yours!

Happy pub day to Bureau of Useless Splendour by Chris Banks! Banks lets his imagination roam across the science of DNA sequencing, internet memes, space-time physics, Canadian nationalism, even reimagined fortune cookie “fortunes” in this collection of poetry. ecwpress.com/collections/...

Just got word that our Disability: The Revolution issue has sold out and that we'll be doing a second print run! This has happened only once before in the magazine's 81 year history. So proud to have played a part in bringing this to our readers.

So lovely to read poems in the Haskell Library & Opera House yesterday. The historical building straddles the line between Canada and the US — where Stanstead, QC meets Derby Line, VT. I loved connecting with poets from both sides of the border. Gratitude to Stanstead Arts & organizer Derek Webster.

A fantastic choice! I once sat across from her at a dinner in her honor and it was too wide a table for us to actually converse so we just shot each other knowing looks as we ignored the people to either side of us. It was one of the best one night relationships I've ever had.

Looking forward to reading at this event with poets from both sides of the border.

Next Saturday! Do come out if you are in the vicinity on either side of the border! Looking forward to hearing @sarahwolfson.bsky.social and @ringtales.blacksky.app and so many more!

Today in class, I heard myself compare a particular poem’s movement to the tiki-taka style of soccer (an unhinged overreach). Tried to save face by turning the moment into a lesson on metaphor as an act of inquiry, which I think is from Mark Doty. Unclear this worked. 🤣🫣🤷🏻‍♀️⚽️

The needfulness of this event seems to grow with every passing day, though even in less fraught times such events should happen more often. 🇨🇦

I’m happy to announce that on Saturday, October 10 from 1-5pm, I will be one of 18 poets from Vermont and Canada reading at the Haskell Opera House on the border between Derby Line VT and Stanstead QC, celebrating poetry, community, and unity.

Just taped for the BBC on this fascinating set of observations in humpback whales. I argued that yes we should strongly consider maternal love + grief here, based on what the researchers report--and on what we know abt animals' emotions. #whales #cetaceans #grief #animalgrief #deathstudies #nature

theguardian.comDo whales grieve? Rare footage of humpback alongside stillborn calf suggests they might | Olaf Meynecke for the ConversationThe behaviours we observed could represent grief, but they could also reflect maternal attachment, confusion or instinctive caregiving

Occasional reminder that pedagogy should be eccentric and calibrated to the uniquely bizarre access you have managed to cobble together in order to crack open a complicated form of understanding.
