I wrote about how songs about trains disappeared in America but stayed alive in Japan, and one thing I only hinted at is that not only did cars become dominant in the 60s & 70s, LA became more dominant in music industry at that time open.substack.com/pub/inoueian...

Especially relevant when you are the oversees relative

I can call (even with video!) my overseas relatives for free, instead of $1/minute crackly phone line.

When you get an Art Institute membership, you inevitably think about how many visits you need to make it “worth it”, then you go upstairs during the member-only hour and see no one in front of the Seurat and obviously it’s worth it

If you enjoyed this video on this text-based platform, I recommend Francesco Turrisi's writing—he plays with Rhiannon Giddens & Wu Man in the Silk Road Ensemble & talks often about this kind of cross-cultural musical exchanges (and about food) francescoturrisi.substack.com

When Grammy-winning musician Rhiannon Giddens begins playing “Old Corn Liquor,” a traditional Black American folk tune, acclaimed Chinese pipa virtuoso Wu Man recognizes similarities to Chinese pentatonic music and spontaneously joins in. The joy on their faces says it all.

Reincarnation (1983) is part of her recurring mystical streak & I'm not sure it really works. Voyager (also 1983) is much better imo. Leads off w/ this extremely 80s song about a group of girlfriends. "Girlfriends" by Yumi Matsutoya www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGKG...

Pearl Pierce (1982) is a great city pop album w/ heavy disco feel especially the 1st half "Come See the Amusement Park Illumination" by Yumi Matsutoya open.spotify.com/track/359IiO...

Chicago Printmaking Collaborative was great #OpenHouseChicago This was my 3rd time in Lincoln Square in the past 3 weeks. So this could've been my 3rd time at Apple Fest

They had a little kid-friendly space in the middle where you could draw pictures on paper that you fold into a little house (CPC printed the house template). Nice conversation w/ the OHC volunteer there as 4yo painted his house & 1yo scribbled on newspapers

On a separate note, at a kids' Halloween party tonight, met a dad who, unprompted, started talking about biking. When I talked about how I sometimes go out a kid in the bike seat, he mentioned wanting to do Critical Mass with his 1-year-old

and obviously, people getting recognized by Michelin are the ones trying to change the boring restaurant scene, so my comment's not fair to them

We were planning on doing some OHC downtown, but my wife is out of commission and it doesn’t seem like a good idea to do it as 1 adult and 2 kids, so yeah…

question for the audience: if you were ultra rich (let’s say $25M), what completely frivolous thing are you buying?

Was on Grand, west of the river, saw a sign on an empty storefront advertising itself as being in River North. Just now, heard someone describe Erie Cafe, on Erie just east of the river, as being in the West Loop. I feel like there’s not much room for confusion, but I guess I’m wrong

This was a big oversight when I was listing old train songs There's a very recent recording by Rhiannon Giddens, and another one last year by Muireann Bradley "Freight Train" by Elizabeth Cotten www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2DC...

1yo is still quite vowel-y Jam is somewhere in between "jama" and "dama"—he's said "I love jama" All big cats are "jaga"

Satoru Inoue@satoruinoue.com

1yo is starting to fill out the alphabet. “bu(s)”, “ca(r)”, “do(g)”… There’s actually a lot of b-words. “bi(ke)” “boa(t)” “boo(k)”

One of those fugitives: Former Loretto Hospital executive Anosh Ahmed, who faces fraud charges. He was investigated after @blockclubchi.bsky.social found evidence he took then-rare COVID-19 vaccines from the Chicago hospital for employees at Trump Tower, where Ahmed had a condo.

What if we threw a parade with more people getting paid by the city to keep people off the route than spectators? Hypothetically, of course.
