New paper! 🎉 How do Arctic leads (cracks in sea ice) affect the atmosphere under different conditions? Condensing plumes can act as "radiator fins", efficiently removing energy downstream; sometimes cooling the air even more than the lead initially warmed it! @agu.org @unicologne.bsky.social

Meteorologist Matthew Cappucci flew into the eye of Hurricane Melissa, a Category 5 storm that is projected to hit Jamaica. “It was equal parts scientifically stunning and horrifying from a humanitarian standpoint,” he wrote, flying in one of two groups of hurricane hunters. https://wapo.st/42XpWmq

We have a new preprint online at ESS Open Archive, under review at JAMES. We conducted LES to investigate how Arctic leads impact the moist static energy budget of the ABL and, for example, found that lead plumes are highly effective in removing heat via longwave radiation. doi.org/10.22541/ess...

🆕 The discovery of new complex organic molecules at Saturn's #Enceladus enhances the likelihood that the moon is habitable 🪐 On Earth, these molecules are involved in chemical reaction chains that lead to the more complex molecules essential for life. Read more 👉 www.esa.int/Science_Expl... 🔭 🧪 ☄️

Interesting paper about how top policy makers underestimate people's willingness to contribute part of their income to combat climate change. @nature.com doi.org/10.1038/s432...
We recently published a paper on how the low entrainment efficiency of Arctic mixed-phase cloud layers is influenced by wind shear and radiative effects using dozens of high-resolution Large-Eddy simulations @ametsoc.org doi.org/10.1175/JAS-...
I will present our current work on simulating the impact of leads on the Arctic atmospheric boundary layer at #AGU24 @agu.org / Contribution C41E-0231. This is strongly based on our recently published paper in JAMES: doi.org/10.1029/2024...
