More recently at #WCRI2026, Renee Hoch presented PLOS data on large paper mill cases showing a sharp rise among articles published in 2020, another spike in 2021 and high levels ever since, and argued that AI makes paper mill content easier to produce and harder to detect. 2/4

The ISC Forum on Publishing and Research Assessment is running a survey to understand what kinds of scientific contributions currently go unrecognized, and why. Deadline: 31 August 2026. https://council.science/news/survey-what-counts-as-a-scientific-contribution/

It started with a misspelled word. Nature’s feature on review mills builds on the work of María Ángeles Oviedo-García, who coined the term. In summer 2023 she spotted a typo in an open peer review, searched for it, and found the same report filed by different reviewers. 1/3
