Day 27 of #31DaysOfGraves - Portrait
The site of the actual grave of George Buchanan, historian, scholar and tutor of King James VI, in Greyfriars Kirkyard in Edinburgh, was lost centuries ago.
Two stones have since been raised over possible locations, this memorial has his likeness on it.
A community group on the island of Raasay are planning to convert the former Free Presbyterian church on the island into a shop and community hub.

Double whammy for today’s #31DaysOfGraves prompt of ‘portrait’ with a portrait (well, bust) of a portrait painter. William Bonnar RSA died in 1853, and is buried in St Cuthbert’s Kirkyard in Edinburgh.
One of a pair of angels on the spandrels surrounding the rose window of James Sellars' magnificent French Gothic style Kelvinside Hillhead Parish Church on Saltoun Street in the West End of Glasgow.

Day 26 of #31DaysOfGraves - Accident
Few shipwrecks in history have captured the public imagination as much the one which claimed the life of Alexander Cairns, commemorated here on a family memorial at Kinfauns Kirkyard in Perthshire.
28 year old Alexander went down with the Titanic in Apr 1912.
Although often listed as a "First Class Passenger", Alexander was actually the manservant of wealthy American passenger William Ernest Carter, who survived the sinking.
Alexander shared a ticket with maid Augusta Jeanne Serreplaà who also survived when she joined her mistress in a lifeboat.
The former Lockhart Memorial Church, sitting in the shadow of the Easter Road Stadium of Hibernian Football Club, this B-listed Gothic church was designed by the architectural practice of Jeffrey Waddell and Young and it will celebrate its 100th birthday next year.
Edinburgh’s home of charities elevates mission with new roof
A building in the heart of Leith has completed a major roofing project, giving Edinburgh's non-profit and community-driven organisations a refreshed space....
On the site of Bowden Kirk, #ScottishChurchOfTheWeek, there has been a Christian presence since around 1128, but most of the church dates to the early 17th C.
Despite substantial repairs in 1794 and major alterations in 1909 by architect Peter MacGregor Chalmers many original features remain.

Further work took place in 1911-12, under the local architectural firm of R & J Grieve, to erect a new external staircase and a vestry to the north of the chancel.

Some members of the Aberdeen Church Recorders visited the beautiful little kirk in Stracathro last week to document the building. The church recently passed into the ownership of a local community trust.
(Images: Ali Cameron)
Some local residents also stopped by and shared their memories of this beloved building and the many items deposited for safe-keeping inside, enriching the recording visit even more.

As always, our thanks to these amazing volunteer recorders for their ongoing work capturing the church heritage of north east Scotland and to this lovely kirk's new owners for welcoming them in.

#31DaysOfGraves#Accident In High Blantyre Cemetery, Lanarkshire, stands an impressive obelisk monument to 240 coal miners who died in 2 separate accidents. This community suffered many more such losses over the years. A history of these is at buff.ly/Lzbf6gd Transcript of MI is in alt txt.
Day 25 of #31DaysOfGraves - Tree
This unusual ceramic tree memorial is located in the kirkyard of St Maur's Glencairn Parish Church in East Ayrshire.
The top is missing, which would once have memorialised the first occupant of the grave below, while its "sawn" branches list two of his children.
Inside the wonderfully eccentric St Conan's Kirk on the north shore of Loch Awe in Argyll. Built from 1907 to 1930, it drew together what its designer considered to be the best or most interesting features found in many other churches. More pics and info: www.undiscoveredscot...#Scotland#Argyll
Day 24 of #31DaysOfGraves being us to ‘contrast’. On the coast north of Montrose is Nether Kirkyard. It was a bright, cold day with strong shadows, so the lettering stood out clearly. Unlike the other women buried here, Helen Brand’s profession is mentioned - she was a midwife in the 1800s.
The tantalising remains of the little-known Lesmahagow Priory in South Lanarkshire. Founded in 1144, everything but the priory church was quarried down to ground level for its stone in the 1600s. More pics and info: www.undiscoveredscot...#Scotland#Lesmahagow#SouthLanarkshire#Lanarkshire

Day 23 of #31DaysOfGraves - Wings
Scotland's remarkable national assemblage of 18th carved headstones are a wonderful but fragile inheritance.

Day 21: Air
Chairs in St Mark's churchyard, Portobello, Edinburgh
During lockdown, graveyards were great to get some fresh air and meet others.
He has no grave but Sir Patrick Geddes (1854–1932) viewed fresh air, sunlight, and green spaces as essential in urban environments.
