One of the things I’ve had to work on is understanding that my writing career may just be a quiet one where I love the work of writing books and publishing, but my books may never be reviewed in the NYT, featured in bookstore windows, or on bestseller lists. Some writers are leaving gems ... 1/2

in plain sight for readers to discover later in a cool used bookstore. I think of all of the books with authors who are long gone, their words inspiring me from the past, being discovered in their future. 2/2

In modern parlance, John Steinbeck was shook. I relate. Writers are a sensitive bunch like delicate flowers in the path of a tornado, the tornado being his helpful and supportive editor.

Very sad news for so many great editorial employees and contracted writers. This will bring down imprints under their umbrella like Counter Point and Soft Skull. The Catapult union was busted before it could even start to support the employees; they're being denied employment by the new owner.

Writers: have you ever written a screenplay or adapted one of your books into one? I highly recommend you give it a try. If you love movies or TV, then it's an interesting exercise, at least, to understand how different a screenplay is from a novel as a storytelling medium... 1/2

I'm going to revise this screenplay adaptation of my novel THE CODGER AND THE SPARROW a third time to get the page count down to 120 pages. It's too long right now. Wish me luck! 2/2

We voted early! Get out and vote, y'all! I've never seen a line for early voting before like today, but we got it done. Here I am with my wife and two of my kiddos. My other two kiddos voted in Dallas and Houston. ☑️☑️☑️☑️☑️☑️

I've never related to Steinbeck more than reading his diatribe on hard vs soft pencils and the relentless dawdling he commits to BEFORE actually writing fiction. LOL #writerscommunity

Having read East of Eden this past summer (I loved it by the way), I'm now in a deep dive. Nerding out, as they say. See you on the flip side.

Comic book mail: Amazing Spider-Man #82. Mar 1970. Writer: Stan Lee. Penciler: John Romita Sr. "And then came Electro!" After cleaning his Spidey suit at a laundromat & feeling sorry for himself, Peter decides that Spidey making a late-night TV appearance will get him money. Then Electro attacks!

After reading two contemporary novels, I'm back to one of my favorites, John Steinbeck. Once I read this one, then I'll have read all of his books. It's been a great journey for me! I love so many of his novels: Tortilla Flat, The Grapes of Wrath, Cannery Row, East of Eden. Have you read this novel?

If ICE is shooting Door Dash drivers, poets, and nurses in your community, then it's not about immigration or safety. It's fascism. Vote them out this November!

One of the things writers have to endure that's not talked enough about is the waiting. Writers wait for things for SO LONG. Months can go by, years even, for tidbits of news about their manuscripts or their books. Was it accepted by an agent? Still waiting. Months! Once accepted by an agent... 1/2

was it accepted by a publisher? Still waiting. Several more months, maybe a year! Once accepted by a publisher, how long until it publishes? YEARS! So much waiting. What to do? Keep writing! 2/2 end #writerscommunity

Comic book mail: Amazing Spider-Man #256. Sep 1984. Writer: Tom DeFalco. Penciler: Ron Frenz. "Introducing... Puma!" A feline-heavy issue with Black Cat and her new bad-luck powers and the introduction of Puma, a Native American supervillain. Black Cat has been helping Peter with photos, too.

Some of my fave back issues in my collection are Marvel Team-Up #1-4 with covers drawn by Gil Kane! Kane's style is dramatic and weird, and I love them! The series showed potential in the first dozen issues, then seemed to lose steam later on except for a great Claremont and Byrne run. Sigh...

Comic book mail: Amazing Spider-Man #239. Apr 1983. Writer: Roger Stern. Penciler: John Romita Jr. "Now Strikes the Hobgoblin!" Hobgoblin gloats about how all of the major newspaper will be carrying stories about his work. Oh, how times have changed! Great cover by John Romita, Jr.!

My wife just informed me that she's read posts with people explaining that they use the Keurig machines in their hotel rooms to quickly rinse their thong underwear with hot water. As if I needed another reason to NOT make coffee in my hotel rooms. I just can't even ...

Milo the Cat came to visit me yesterday. He belongs to a neighbor down the street. He likes to hang out on my front porch and sploot in the shade. He's a sweet boy. 😻

Nothing like being invited to be a featured author at a book festival and replying with my acceptance! It feels amazing when it happens. A definite "pinch me" moment. #writerscommunity

I graduated the year Daniel Johnston painted this on the side of the long-gone Sound Exchange record store. 1993. A good year for music fans. So strange to see this section of the wall still standing, the rest of the building long since knocked down. Hi, how are you? Feeling ok, my dude.
