Mourinho was once asked to come up with the saddest five-a-side team ever. This is what he wrote: Forssell, Bebe, Schuurs, Neville, Warne

Charles Boehm ⚽️@cboehm.bsky.social

I see Jose Mourinho has entered his Hemingway era, then

People on the next table talking about going to see Wicker. ‘Olivia Colman was great in that show where she was married to a vicar” “Rev, it was called, starring Tom Holland’s dad. Him from Spider-Man.” “No, that wasn’t it. It had that woman with the big nose, who was in the last Indiana Jones film”

It was the 80th anniversary of Alfred Hitchcock's NOTORIOUS and I got to write about Roger Ebert's favorite movie at @ebertvoices.bsky.social! I looked at how the movie looks at men as various levels of trash, and how often women get thrown under the bus. www.rogerebert.com/features/not...

I'm always frank and earnest about this film - it's fantastic

30 years ago, Shane Black wrote Geena Davis one of her greatest roles with The Long Kiss Goodnight's Samantha Caine. tinyurl.com/2hhfsydh

I was at a film festival in Malta earlier this year and Renny Harlin was giving a masterclass, and afterwards I got to tell him how much I loved The Long Kiss Goodnight, which was a real highlight of the trip. Also, he had loads of great stories about shooting Cutthroat Island on the island.

He spoke about working with Italian costume designer Enrico Sabbatini, who meticulously designed the period costumes. When Harlin told him they'd need multiples for the big action sequence on the wharf, Sabbatini just said 'No thankyou.'

Tonight's viewing: Cowboy (1958) Nice-looking Western which sees idealistic newbie Jack Lemmon joining old hand Glenn Ford's cattle drive and learning the hard way what it means to be a cowboy. Cool Saul Bass opening titles too.

Westerns are very often about Men having a Code coming up against other Men with a different/no Code and Cowboy is all about that, as Ford's character tries to inculcate in Lemmon the precise amount of toughness he needs to be a cowboy, while keeping the amount of empathy to be a man.

A young girl living in a London council flat in the early 70s finds her family relationships unravelling as she confronts a tragedy. A typically great study in psychology from the reliably brilliant Celia Dale. As often with Dale, this feels like a slow-motion car crash, in the best way.

Today’s reading:

Watched The End Of Oak Street last night and had a pretty good time of it, but couldn't help imagining a much darker, dramatic sequel where that family falls apart as it deals with trauma, alienation and unresolved issues.

Today's Teesside Lead is about the new documentary feature by @jeaniefinlay.com which tells the story of Hartlepool fishers whose livelihoods were wiped out overnight at the same time Ben Houchen's flagship freeport was being developed nearby. All Rivers Spill Their Stories to the Sea is out now.

I often look out for old pulp publisher logos from Europe (and sometimes make t-shirts out of them) and have just come across this great one. Who can resist a skeleton in a top hat wielding a cane?

Happy Diana Dors's birthday! (Today!) [photograph by Harry George Gillard]

Diana Dors holds a special place in my heart because Sandy Wilson, in The Buccaneer, rhymed her with "adoption laws."

A 90s Richard Matheson adaptation, an Allison Anders musical comedy-drama with a great soundtrack, a Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson short and a 1983 New Zealand film about revenge and colonialism (courtesy of a recommendation from the director of MĀRAMA). #LastFourWatched

Feedback on weird/horror fiction is: * It’s unsatisfying and too ambiguous; I need to know Turniphead’s origin story. (50%) * It's too neat and obvious; I don't think we should even be sure Turniphead actually exists. (50%)

New short story rejection. They said they loved the 'wonderfully unsettling premise' but were 'troubled by the unanswered questions surrounding its ending'. They'd consider it again if I rewrote it to answer some of the questions, which I do appreciate. Except the questions were kind of the point.

Biopic of a fictional Brill Building songwriter (Illeana Douglas), journeying through the 60s music scene. The specially composed songs in the styles of the time are great and Douglas is terrific at the centre of it all. Also enjoyed John Turturro as a surprisingly non-terrible music label boss.

Tonight’s viewing:

I do have to say though, if i was casting someone to play a very thinly-veiled version of 1960s Pet Sounds-era Brian Wilson, Matt Dillon would not exactly be top of my list.

Incredible weekend at @mayhemfilmfestival.bsky.social as always. Highlights include the gnarly, class-conscious French slasher film Kraken (or No Way Down), the oddly heartwarming Indonesian supernatural gorefest Ghost in the Cell, and the hilarious New Zealand body horror Mum, I'm Alien Pregnant.

We all know the "Viggo broke his toe" story but what's another movie fact you're personally compelled to bring up every time without prompting? For me, it's the fact that Robin Tunney is wearing a wig in The Craft because of having just shaved her head to save her job filming Empire Records.

One of the highlights of the festival this year was getting to host the Q&A with Taratoa Stappard after our screening of the terrific MĀRAMA, a Māori Gothic horror set in Yorkshire. It's getting a much-deserved UK theatrical release in December.

Yesterday, had the absolute joy of screening a brand new 4K restoration of Guy Maddin's CAREFUL to a festival crowd who absolutely did not know what they were in for. Wondrous stuff.

Ghost In The Machine benefits from inventive shot choices from director Rachel 'Tank Girl' Talalay, and a pretty brisk pace. Also, for any fans of early 90s computer graphics, this thing is a goldmine.
