23rd A re-read of Roddy Doyle’s Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha. A novel told from the perspective of a 10 year old boy grappling with the delights and horrors of school, friendship and the collapse of his parents’ marriage. Miraculously convincing. #BooksOf2026

Elon Musk has now issued his fourth explanation for his actions in throttling StarLink and StarShield. Note that each of his explanations is inconsistent with its predecessor. And this one focuses on Ukraine supposedly violating its terms of service. If it did, that's an easily ascertainable fact.

The world is getting more of its electricity from renewables but less from nuclear power. If the world is to reduce its carbon emissions and tackle climate change, it needs to move away from fossil fuels to low-carbon power.

Every member of the Conservative Party who voted for Truss to be leader owes the country a substantial compensation payment.

Sam Freedman@samfr.bsky.social

Reminded again of the column Camilla Long wrote in which she attacked me and others as sexist for suggesting Truss wasn't a suitable person to be PM. www.thetimes.com/comment/arti...

This is hardly the biggest issue right now but it bothered me that the #traitors made no attempt last night to add £9,000 to the charity pot, preferring instead to try to win a party game that means nothing and is just supposed to be a bit of fun. Losing sight of the big picture?

In case you missed it. Some very tasty morsels here.

Three episodes into the new series of The Diplomat and the very best thing about it is Stuart and Eidra trying to sort out their relationship! (Please no spoilers or even oblique hints about what’s to come)

Good piece on the political and economic realities that will face any radical right party getting into power. Helpful for avoiding the council of despair, especially since there’s plenty of spadework for liberals to do.

Sam Freedman@samfr.bsky.social

New post: Over the next year there a series of European elections where the radical right could gain more power than ever before. How will this play out? We have 30 years of evidence that tells us they will struggle. Obituries for liberalism are premature. samf.substack.com/p/the-strait...

Mrs C and I got flu and Covid shots yesterday. Pleased to report we have been suffering few ill effects today – a little bit of muscle ache. Glad to have the protection.

A fellow of the @royalsociety.org harnessing science in the service of inhumanity. More people are dying in Ukraine thanks to his actions. But I guess that’s still somehow not in violation of their code of conduct.

When I saw “Goodnight and Good Luck” back in 2005 I thought it was worthy but dull. Re-watching at the weekend, I was gripped. It seems more relevant than ever. Also, beautifully shot with a brilliant performance from David Strathairn.

This is good – a very useful framing for those of us disoriented by the torrent of AI technology.

Watched “Good Night and Good Luck” yesterday and my goodness CBS News is a million miles from where it was in 1954 in terms of journalistic integrity.

Justin Baragona@justinbaragona.bsky.social

"This is spiraling for CBS. The audience is already fleeing," a former CBS News staffer told me. "This type of political stuff from an on-air reporter is only gonna speed up the audience's escape."

I didn’t know much about about Abdul El-Sayed before watching this but I knew as soon as I’d seen it that he’d worked as a teacher — and sure enough he was an assistant professor in epidemiology. This is how you walk a student through a dumb take.

1/ The Musk-Trump decision to degrade Ukraine's Starlink access as a pressure tactic is a disaster not just for the United States' reputation but for the entire US defence industry. Musk's action may end up burning the whole industry. ⬇️

Times Higher has just covered this story, and report the CAF’s claim that the inquiry will not be pre-judged. They do not report the clear conflict of interest posed by appointing Pinker to the panel, who repeatedly tweeted his opinion of Arday, including “sociopathic liar” bsky.app/profile/time...

Rebecca Sear@rebeccasear.bsky.social

The Committee for Academic Freedom has launched an investigation into Professor Arday’s hiring, and appointed Steven Pinker - listed as a referee on the CV of Arday’s accuser - to the panel. Because Cambridge should not have the freedom to decide its own appointments?

I don't understand this. 52 years later, why try and replicate the original? It's obviously not going to be the same study. The world has changed; cars, traffic, and people have changed. If one is interested in false memory, why not design the best study you can? What can you conclude meaningfully?

Among the depressing / infuriating aspects of the new, practically unworkable, NHS guidance on single sex wards, is that it will impact trans people’s engagement with healthcare services, leaving a community already vulnerable to health inequalities even more exposed.
