Watching Netflix's "Below" is reminding me of my time in St. John's when I was working on my MS degree at Memorial University. MUN's Ocean Science Centre, which plays a major role in the series, is where I got my scuba diving training. In February 1984. We had to break ice to get below the surface.

Happy birthday Earth! 6030 years young today (as of 9:00AM that is). :D

History of Geology@historyofgeology.bsky.social

October 23, has become famous as the "birthday of Earth" - thanks to the brief mention in many textbooks of Irish Archbishop James Ussher and his chronology 🌍🎂 The exact date given by the Ussher-Lightfoot-Chronology for the creation of Earth is October 23, 4004 B.C. in the early morning hours ...

1 hour. I had a green card but the position had government oversite and it specified that you had to be an American citizen. It was a volunteer board position, but to be escorted out of the building was pretty embarassing. I hold no grudges. There was a miss communication concerning eligibility.

I spend 25 years living on the US Gulf Coast in Mobile Alabama. Every hurrican that approached the area was a concern, especially a majorctorms (Cat 3+) after a long period of hurricane quiescence. Dead branches can cause big damage. Be safe my southern friends!

Student journalists still believe that it’s more important to hold powerful people to account than it is to hold on to access to those powerful people. They haven’t become Savvy Insiders yet

Nor'easters can be just a damaging to the coast as hurricanes especially when they stick to one area for a long time. Weather-radar wise they essentially are non-tropical cyclones

Nor'easter isn't done yet! 🌧️ Coastal Flood Warnings remain in effect along the eastern Massachusetts coast, including the Cape and Islands, through Sunday evening. on.nbcboston.com/5f0oitP

Reposting because I forgot to tag #MinCup26 Mineral Cup 2026 is live! Today, Azurite gets my vote over Smithsonite for the simple reason that I have never successfully figured out how to distinguish Smithsonite from Hemimorphite, but I have never confused Azurite with any other mineral.

Mineral Cup 2026 is live! Today, Azurite gets my vote over Smithsonite for the simple reason that I have never successfully figured out how to distinguish Smithsonite from Hemimorphite, but I have never confused Azurite with any other mineral. Uniqueness for the win!

David was also a prolific author of sedimentology, paleontology and hydrology papers and until his retirement a few years ago, was a valued member of the #GeologicalSurveyofAlabama. And as you mentioned, he was a decent guy. He was also one of the best supporters of geoeducational in the USA.

Oh, this is terrible news. David’s poetry appeared nearly a dozen times in Kaleidotrope—most recently in Spring 2025—and while we never met, he always seemed like a decent guy in all my dealings with him. His humor will be missed, and my sincere condolences to his family and friends.

I'm in the mode to rename things. I hereby decree that Florida is renamed Bogland. That New Zealand is renamed SemiColonLand. That the moon is renamed GreyMarble. And for consistency, that Venus and Mars are renamed, respectively, PoisonMarble and RedMarble. Thank me later.
