A young sea turtle with a beautifully patterned shell gliding through crystal clear water in Florida. The water in this spot was only about 3 feet deep. #nature #animals #wildlife #ocean #naturephotography

A school of bluefish swimming through a huge fever of rays in the gulf near Tampa, Florida. Really large gatherings of rays like this usually attract other species of fish as well as sharks looking for feeding opportunities. #nature #fish #ocean #florida #wildilfe #naturephotography

This guy almost lost his shorts when he finally saw the manatee that had swam up to him in the gulf & was just staring at him. In his defense, manatees can be very stealthy & seeing such a big animal right next to you can be startling. #nature #animals #wildlife #ocean #florida #funny

She gave her kid a little push, then realized she pushed her right at a manatee that was swimming past the family in the gulf near Clearwater, Florida. It's a good thing they're friendly or that it wasn't something else. #nature #animals #wildlife #florida #beach

Time lapse video of a huge school of rays off the coast of Florida. I did a time lapse video to show the movement of the rays as well as the large amount of sediment stirred up as they dig up clams & other crustaceans from the #ocean floor. #nature #amazing #wildlife #florida

Cormorants swimming back & forth under my kayak to catch fish that are startled out of their hiding places in the sea grass by my passing shadow. Tampa, Florida. #nature #birds #animals #awesome #kayaking #florida

A young manatee, almost a baby, swimming in the gulf through tourists at the beach near Clearwater, Florida. Most of the people didn't even see it. It was looking for its mom, they got separated when people started crowding and chasing after them earlier. #nature #animals #florida #wildlife #beach

Curious Manatees. A lot of people mistake the curiosity of manatees to mean they love people. These manatees came up to check the boat out & one followed the paddleboard as we towed it back to the dock. It's illegal to touch, feed, or harass manatees. #nature #animals #florida #wildlife #manatees

The traffic leaving Florida for the hurricane right now :-) Seriously though, manatees don't leave Florida when a hurricane comes. Every now and then a few might get stranded but for the most part they don't have any problem dealing with the hurricanes. #nature #animals #wildlife #florida

Absolutely Epic! Hundreds of thousands of rays off the coast of #florida. This is probably the most #amazing spectacle I've seen in #nature. Rays gather in large groups for mating & migration. The size of the groups fluctuates from year to year. #animals #wildlife #naturephotography

Bottlenose dolphins getting some air in Tampa Bay with part of the city in the background. I had a good DSLR camera in one hand to take high resolution pictures, and a gopro in my other hand to capture it on video. Was standing in the kayak when I took this :-) #nature #animals #wildlife #tampa

Time lapse shot of a large school of rays swimming off the coast of Florida. The rays were stacked all the way to the bottom and were stirring up sediment from the sea floor as they dug up clams & other crustaceans in the sand. #nature #wildlife #amazing #animals #naturephotography #florida

A huge school of rays circling off the coast of Florida. 24 foot boat for scale. These are Cownose Rays. I've been filming & documenting these large gatherings for well over a decade. This is one of the largest groups of rays ever filmed. #nature #animals #wildlife #florida #naturephotography

A big hammerhead shark showed up while I was filming this. It swam up from the depths and was just suddenly there, next to the boat, rays scattering everywhere. Unfortunately, the camera wasn't pointing in the right direction to catch it, but I did get footage of it stalking the rays.

You don't have to run fast, just faster than the person you're with. I thought it was pretty funny how this guy outran the woman when they finally saw the manatee in the gulf in Florida. #nature #wildlife #florida #beach #animals #ocean

Cownose Rays surfing the swells. This was out in the gulf off the coast of Florida. They also surf at the beach and can sometimes be seen riding waves all the way to shore and flapping their way back into the water. bsky.app/profile/seet... #nature #animals #florida #wildlife #naturephotography

Rays surfing at the beach in Florida. These Cownose Rays surf to shore to feed on mole crabs (aka sand fleas) and Coquina Clams that bury into the sand as waves recede from the beach. #nature #amazing #animals #wildlife #florida

Really big rays swimming past people at the beach near Clearwater, Florida a couple days ago. These Spotted Eagle Rays were about 30 feet from shore. #nature #florida #wildlife #animals #beach

The way the morning sun lit up this big, beautiful Loggerhead Sea Turtle swimming along the beach this morning in the gulf. This guy was cruising just 30 feet from shore. #nature #animals #wildlife #florida #naturephotography

They must have thought it was a patch of seaweed or something, until it started following them. I wonder if they ever figured out it was just a curious manatee. #nature #ocean #wildlife #florida #animals

5 big Spotted Eagle Rays swimming along the beach in Florida yesterday. These rays get up to about 11 feet wide. They use their pointy noses to dig up clams and other shellfish on the ocean floor. #nature #animals #wildlife #florida #ocean

Sea turtle hanging out at the surface for a few moments before diving down into a school of fish below. I took this video about 1/3 mile from the shore in Clearwater, FL yesterday. #nature #turtle #animals #ocean #seaturtle

a dolphin hanging out with some manatees in Tampa Bay on a sand bar. The dolphin was stalking a school of fish that was swimming around the manatees. #nature #wildlife #florida #animals #naturephotography #dolphins

Manatees swimming through a big school of rays in Tampa, Florida. The water is clear but looks yellowish because of the color of the sand. They were hanging out on a shallow sandbar in about 4 feet deep water. #nature #wildlife #animals #florida #naturephotography

a HUGE school of rays swimming in a circle off the coast of Clearwater, Florida. I was able to see this group of cownose rays from just over a mile away. Although they are not classified as stingrays, they can still sting. #nature #wildlife #animals #naturephotography #florida #ocean

A herd of manatees following my kayak as I back away. Yes, I'm standing up. I almost always stand in the kayak because of the better vantage point. They were chasing each other around and headed right at me when they spotted me. #nature #wildlife #animals #kayaking #florida

More info for anyone interested... A group of manatees is called an aggregation. If they're mating, as these manatees were, it can also be called a mating herd. They get really rowdy when they're in the mood, that's why I was trying to back away. I didn't feel like getting tipped over.

Perfect Timing! These dolphins have learned how to stun fish with their tails. Catching a fish isn't always easy, even for a dolphin. Dolphins that learn how to stun fish with their tails avoid the chase. I took the video near Tampa, Florida. #nature #animals #wildlife #florida #dolphins

Can I get a ride? - snake probably. This Saltmarsh Snake was far from shore when I saw it. When it saw the kayak it swam towards me so I picked it up and gave it a ride to shore. They aren't venomous. #nature #animals #wildlife #snake #florida

A pod of bottlenose dolphins swimming along the beach in Indian Rocks Beach, Florida this morning. There are NO species of porpoise in the Gulf of Mexico contrary to popular misconception. #nature #beach #florida #dolphins #animals #wildlife

When you see a face hugger alien swimming in the water... Horseshoe Crabs predate dinosaurs & are 440 million years old. They have blue blood & 10 eyes. They're more closely related to spiders than crustaceans. #nature #animals #wildilfe #creepy #facehugger

Manatees control their buoyancy by farting. Manatees have terrible breath, but their farts are even worse. It's like rotten eggs and sulfur, with a side of smelly fish. When there's no wind you can smell them above water from a distance. #nature #animals #wildlife #florida #kayaking

Alligator surfaces right under my kayak in murky water. Even though I've grown up around alligators and like them, this had me a little nervous knowing it could tip the kayak. This is an older video I decided was worth a repost. #florida #animals #kayaking #nope #alligators

Kayaking down Blackwater River in NW #Florida. Surrounded by thousands of acres of #wilderness, almost every bend in the #river has a beautiful white sand beach to pull up and relax. Most of the river is only 2-4 feet deep. #nature #kayaking #blackwaterriver #scenic

The water color is natural & is caused by decaying vegetation at the river's edge leaching tannins that stain the water a dark brown color. It's a sign of a healthy ecosystem, and not indicative of a problem.

Manatees have sensitive tactile hairs that cover their body. They connect to a nerve network & detect things underwater. This gives the manatee a view of its surroundings similar to a dolphin's sonar, but using a different process. #nature #animals #wildlife #florida #kayaking

A #bird following a #stingray to catch #fish startled from their hiding place in the sea grass as the stingray passes over them. Cormorants also follow kayaks & paddleboards in this part of #florida to catch fish startled from their hiding places by the kayaks shadows. #nature #animals #wildlife

It always impresses me how unobservant people are when they go swimming at the beach in Florida. This guy never had a clue there was a manatee swimming next to him in the ocean. Opportunity missed. #nature #beach #florida #animals #wildlife

A circling school of Cownose Rays near the beach in Clearwater, Florida yesterday. Nature is Awesome! Notice the long trail of sediment being stirred up by the rays. Different marine life often leaves different tracks to follow just like land animals. #animals #wildlife #nature #florida #awesome

You can almost hear the manatee saying "what cha doin?". It took him a while but he finally noticed the curious manatee circle around him and stare at him for a moment in the gulf. #nature #animals #ocean #florida #wildilfe #manatees

Overly friendly Manatee holding my kayak and looking up through it. Always practice "passive observation" with manatees and don't touch, feed, chase or approach them. Let them come to you, they're very curious and often come right up to people. #nature #animals #wildlife #kayaking #florida
