When I read about past police states (3am door knocking by the Gestapo, Stasi, KGB, etc) The myth was that they were brutally effective in repressing dissent. These dimwits only have the brutal part down.

Don Moynihan@donmoyn.bsky.social

I don't know that there is a definitive line to cross that makes you say, "I live in a police state now" but when masked gunmen can routinely brutalize the public, citizen or immigrant alike, with impunity, you have reached that point.

True tribute, and the most accurate poll I’ve seen yet.

Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was driving his construction crew to work when an ICE officer shot and killed him in Houston. He wasn’t even the person ICE was looking for. Now Texas voters are leaving their “I Voted” stickers at his memorial. #BlueWaveIn10Days

I’m grateful for the invention of color photography because otherwise how could I tell the difference between a dangerous, incompetent politician (ominous black-and-white photo, scary type) and the one I‘m supposed to vote for (good haircut, color photo).

In the movie one of the founder bros brings a friend to the lab on the weekend and six of the experimental dogs get loose and all they find Monday morning is a really expensive pair of sunglasses.

The Attorney General and various other high-level law-enforcement representatives: “We are independent of the executive branch, of course, and would never, except under the most unlikely of—“ Trump: “It was me, I thought it was kind of fishy so I ordered them to do it, they work for me.”

If our team loses on a long last-minute field goal we didn't lose. If we lose by a touchdown, maybe we lost but maybe not. Probably not. If we lose by more than a TD, the game was rigged, because everyone said the game was going to be close. Sorry but those are the rules. (Not if we win, though.)

How does the most powerful person in the world always manage to sound like he didn’ t do the assigned reading and is faking the book report. Catcher in the Rye is about baseball, a very great American pastime, maybe *the* great American pastime, some people say.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Q: Do you think it's right for the richest man in the world to have so much power over what goes on in a war because Russia and Ukraine? TRUMP: Well, I don't think he does. First of all, he's a very good person. He's not gonna do anything wrong. Elon will never do anything wrong.

Pretty sure it's the 19th Century (pre-1865), which he's been trying to bring back for 10 years.

“So what I came up with, Mr. President, it’s a new award, it’s called the Man of the Century Award, OK?” www.huffpost.com/entry/trump-...

The article outlines endless racist, anti-Muslim attacks on El-Sayed, a Michigan native, questioning without evidence his loyalty to America. There’s nothing about vitriol from his side. So—maybe a better headline would be “The Michigan Senate Racism Keeps Getting Nastier”?

How does the article describe the Republican candidate ? “Mike Rogers is a former Army officer, FBI agent and representative. Even Democrats considered him levelheaded and cooperative — ‘a voice for moderation and consensus building.’” Ah, so It’s only his supporters who are bad.

FBI Director Kash Patel said a powerful lawmaker using their position to enrich themselves, using “her position of power and public trust to deflect and defend against her own criminal enterprise,” was “truly the epitome of hypocrisy for a public official.” Then he was struck by lightning.

Unfortunately that’s the one vaccine they’ve taken.

I vote that we transfer shame from the people feeling it unnecessarily (sexual assault victims wondering if the assault was their fault, queer people convinced they're going to hell, children whose best is never good enough for their parents, etc) and give it to powerful assholes instead.

The most shocking accusation of this whole sadistic assholery is that it actually “violated ICE standards.”

Aaron Reichlin-Melnick@reichlinmelnick.bsky.social

NEW: DHS's Inspector General releases a scathing report about the Everglades detention camp known as "Alligator Alcatraz." The OIG finds that the now-closed camp, violated multiple ICE standards. The OIG also confirms detainees were punished with placement in a metal cage in the Florida heat.🧵

If he reversed the order I’d be on board.

“The borrowing let Ellison keep his stock and avoid locking in taxable gains, and highlighted how billionaires often employ a strategy called ‘buy, borrow and die’ to retain their wealth without selling assets.”

We keep re-asking the McCarthy hearing question “Have you no sense of decency, sir. At long last, have you no sense of decency?” but instead of feeling chastened, Vance, Miller (Stephen & Max), Hegseth, RFK Jr and the rest of that army of chittering banshees keep reaffirming “No, actually, I don’t.”

*You* get a bailout and *you* get a bailout and *you* get a bailout. It's the Oprahization of federal spending. I just got a phone call from the president telling me I was paying too much for laundry detergent and promising me a check for $4.27 to make it up to me "because I care about you."

Donald Trump disgusted with the idea that someone who was called to fight in a war weaseled out of that responsibility.

The Bulwark@thebulwark.com

Trump: "We stand with Europe despite its flaws, its weaknesses…But if they don't soon find their way—and they have to find their way—we will have no choice but to leave…We spend so much money on NATO…They weren't there to help. It's just something that we can never really forget."

Clarence Thomas justifies the photos of him in a huge Kohler jacuzzi on Hemsworth Kohler's private island by saying that Jacuzzi is a separate brand and therefore that wasn't a jacuzzi and therefore those despicable accusations are inaccurate and therefore those two weeks didn't affect his decision.

it would be very funny if the court that's not interested in the difference between a musket and an AR-15 went like ahh but air stills are totally new technology

Hot take: Devil in a Blue Dress is a better film noir, a better look at corruption in pre-WW2 Los Angeles, has aged better, and is actually a better movie than Chinatown. Still bitterly disappointed that there were no Easy Rawlins sequels with Denzel.

We've done the same thing here, but less melodramatically--the US Supreme Court, Department of Education and Congress (=Parliament) have all burned themselves to the ground from the perspective of a functioning democracy.

BladeoftheSun@bladeofthes.bsky.social

The Supreme Court burns to the ground in Albania, Parliament and the Department of Education has been stormed, the Prime Minister is in hiding and the country is effectively in the hands of the rebels. Albania rejects blatant corruption and their country being sold.

I am a doctor, and can answer your medical questions. Did I go to medical school? If I heard that question correctly: baseball. Have I "practiced" medicine? I mean, we all need to practice. And before you ask me if I'm actually a doctor, let me just take this call real quick. Yes I did say baseball.
