Here's fun... Both @dracopoullos.bsky.social (who knows me IRL but not by this online handle) is at the Nebulas at the same time as @stevendbrewer.com (who knows me by this online handle but not IRL). One connection by Uni, one by Esperanto - two very clever people linked by a love of Sci-fi... 🙂
Google, in a surprising move, wants even more people to stop using Google... Time was, installing Chrome and setting Google as my homepage was automatic. Now, it's more a case of (almost) anything but.
Google is transforming Search from a list of links into an AI-powered experience filled with conversational answers, autonomous agents, and interactive interfaces — a shift that could further reduce traffic to publishers across the web.
I'm sure I'll get there in the end... Until then, toki pona podcasts coming in hot, like, youtu.be/H0FCcjwV9Kw
"I spoke with a Scientist who, as a single Black woman, joined the faculty of U of C, San Francisco, in 2021 and, at 36, bought a condo. She asked for anonymity, so I'll call her 'Tonya'..." This seems contradictory...
"If she has her own house, what will she need me for?" I don't know, dude, maybe be cool and fun to be around and be happy for her success instead being whiny little sad-ass troll about it? www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle...
I'm not bothered if someone else enjoys works by a "problematic" author. But for me it's like snuggling up on the couch with an arsehole; they don't get snuggle time. Which is a shame, because I loved 'Neverwhere'. It was the one book I was seriously considering trying translating into Esperanto.
Look sometimes you just gotta accept that shitty people are capable of making good art. Also no one is forcing you to look up the political opinions of every author you read. If you like a book, you're allowed to just like that book. You don't have to learn everything about the author. That's okay.
Gustav Landauer, in 1907 there, talking, as so many do when dismissing Esperanto, out of his arse. Not entirely his fault, I suppose... William Auld and Marjorie Boulton weren't born until 1924. 🤷♂️
‘humans can understand and talk to one another because they are different . . . Only the most trivial, petty, unimportant things can be expressed by an artificial product; only what is old and has been endlessly regurgitated – nothing new, fermenting, creative, ingenious’. Gustav Landauer, 1907
I just want an Esperanto book shop. Sort of a cross between the Travel Book shop in Notting Hill and the Local Shop from League of Gentlemen. Few customers, whom I can dissuade with a hissed, 'Estas nenio por VI ĉi tie!' Safe among the Precious Things, drinking coffee, and "writing" my novel. 😁
I just want to own a bookstore in which indie authors have priority and successful, prolific, influential authors come in to shine a light on their work. And when those authors become prolific they come in to hold a light for the next indie authors. Is that such a big ask?
Pacienco estas Virto. Sed kiu volas esti virta! Diable @bsky.app KJF okazas!? Riparu vin mem, uloj!
To be clear, I really don't give a fuck whether someone likes or learns Esperanto. But to suggest it somehow "doesn't work" for people in Africa or SE Asia is asinine in the extreme. It's a foreign language. People in Africa and SE Asia are perfectly capable of learning foreign languages.
also universal languages are a bit eurocentric in a way that is untenable in the 21st century Like, Esperanto only kind-of-works and it can rely on a body of shared European phonotactics, vocabulary, and grammar It doesnt work at all for SE Asia or Africa though!
