pondering: i want a book like ride or die (amazon prime series) but for teens, but the crux of ride or die is that they've been friends for 20+ years and u just cannot replicate that kind of time and attachment and depth of connection + the political intrigue with teens... (or can u??)

as an aside, all those emails referenced my portfolio of work, but the only works my name is attached to as an agent that are currently known publicly (through pm, lbr) are picture books. so why are you querying me on behalf of someone else a book that is not a picture book??

almost immediate update: just checked my email again and there's ANOTHER ONE....... y'all plz save ur time and money and query agents yourself. i cannot stress enough that using a "rep" to send out queries for you is 100% a scam.

so mine was the connection between my belief that literacy is important and that parents/teachers should nurture a love of reading in kids. i would ALWAYS donate to indigo's love of reading foundation, and my current work as an agent who reps childrens books but especially picture books.

obviously since indigo has uh, ties to zionism, i never really go there anymore and don't donate to that foundation anymore either, but i think my work in the industry more than makes up for it and i hope a project i've sold is the reason at least one kid finds a lifelong love for reading!!

recipe: 500ml water 4 black tea bags (I used vanilla comoro from harney & sons) 1/4 cup of ginger syrup 500ml any milk so steep the tea in the water like usual, i did a full 5 minutes for intense flavour put the syrup in a pitcher and pour the hot tea into it so it mixes together top w the milk!

freelance work would be a whole lot easier if clients materialized out of thin air instead of me posting about it constantly and getting Nothing (i havent promoted in a while but i am dreading returning to this and might not bother tbh bc it has been as useless as job applications)

recently I gave a client of mine some feedback that I felt was important SOLELY because what Ernie is talking about here is so common to hear in response to anything written by POC. and it's insane that I felt I had to do this because for some reason people can step into an orc or a drow just fine.

Agents usually don’t speak publicly about the rejections our clients’ projects receive on sub, but it’s so frustrating to receive feedback on authors writing marginalized characters’ based on lived experiences as POC, and hearing those experiences called implausible. Implausible to whom?

it can be as mundane as hating your part time job but knowing u need to earn and save money so you and your friends can go to the music festival this summer. something anyone can get onboard with. and the more cultural or racialized aspects of their life can seep in a bit later.

like yeah this is basically handholding, and yeah it sucks, but it might stop an editor from emailing you back with "this is implausible" or "i cant relate or understand" like wow imagine growing up POC and only reading books written by white people!! 🙄

my client is experimenting with a 2nd person POV with a POC character. the thing with 2nd person is that "you" refers to the character, but the reader becomes the character and is being told how they feel. so establish a universal connection that any reader can get on board with early on.

im gonna start up my office hour streams again! i want it to be fun and casual, with an emphasis on being able to answer questions and peel back the curtain on trad publishing. so, what would you want out of my "literary agent office hour" streams? anything specific? #writingcommunity

lit agent tasneem motala@seraphecda.bsky.social

i actually already have vroid which u can create vtuber model rigs with sooooo meet vtuber me, with my "editorial eye"

some ideas i have when this starts up: - you vote on a subject for each stream and i will do a short deep dive and q+a on it for you! kinda like a free seminar - i can demo you through different processes i have as an agent, like how i write pitches or how i create sublists, etc - AMA sessions
