The shift away from the center is also happening in South America and the USA, not just Europe. One might argue that the bigger story here is the failure of the global neoliberal/neoconservative era to deliver on the progress it promised. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/20/w...

Sharing the first of a few Oonee updates; as many of you know this year has been interesting but the good work must continue. We've begun pre-construction on the city's first Dutch-Style Bike Hub, that entails selecting a GC, confirming revised drawings and selecting components. More 🧵 ⬇️

Some news: This winter Team Oonee is launching NYC's first Dutch-Style🚲 parking hub in Brooklyn's Sunset Park. The Hub will provide free parking for 100+ bikes/scooters, and will include safe charging, and appt based repairs + lite service. This will make history in several ways. More deets in 🧵👇🏾

...for SNAP recipients etc. We hope to wrap up this phase and actively begin construction by mid-Nov with the facility opening in early 2027. More updates on other fronts coming soon!

...geared towards the types of quick-fixes that often can hamper a commute (flat tires, broken gears etc). Most notably, we aim to provide this service to both standard bikes and e-bikes via local partnerships.

...this will also represent the first time that we charge for parking. We want to be careful about how we do this. We're going to deploy a dynamic-pricing system that takes into account demand while also giving discounts available to long-term members. A limited number of spaces will remain free...

...we've also worked to refine the design of the space operationally through use of modular components that will allow for a low capital and operating footprint. This specifically includes the use of vinyl panels for the facade, polished concrete flooring and LED uplighting accents.

We remain excited for the repair & maintenance service. Cyclists will be able to book appointments for service at the space through the revamped mobile app that we're building. These on-demand appointments will be available at commuting times, when many nearby shops aren't available and will be...

...with this approach, we can still accommodate a base of 67 secure bike parking spaces (including two cargo bikes). We can also preserve the concession space at front for community programming and bike repairs, maintenance etc. Notably, we can expand to 75-80 spaces if demand requires.

Earlier this year after our first inspection, we recognized that the sprinkler system was lower than spec'd in the drawings.... this is not uncommon in new construction, but it meant that we could not use the double decker bike racks that we originally envisioned for the space.

In working with our architecture, engineering team and suppliers we aimed to devise an approach that would enable us to preserve as much capacity as possible, while also preserving the user experience. The result was a switch to semi-vertical racks that will have an assisted lift functionality....

The fact that tech-bro can single-handedly ignite discourse about closing a popular 🚇 station says is exhibit A for privilege and who gets a voice in NYC. 🤷🏾‍♂️

I despise seeing what’s really going on stuffed into a “but critics say” clause.

Nearly a billion people in India are being asked to show documents to prove that they should keep the right to vote. The exercise aims to clean India’s voter roll of duplicates and discrepancies, but critics say it undermines the world’s largest democracy, particularly disenfranchising Muslims.

The B65 bus is legendarily slow. It makes a stop on literally every block. Speeding that bus up is *helping* senior citizens and elderly people. It's making the bus more reliable for poor people. Crazy work from the New York Post.

I used to take the B65 to school... going from Albany Ave to 5th Ave. It was so slow that eventually I opted to walk a half-mile to the A train instead of the bus that stopped a block away from me. ...and I grew up next to the projects. Crazy stuff here.

As usual, Doug gets most of the good points in first. But also, since when was the city bus "gentrified transit?" and since when did senior citizens and elderly people not take NYC busses? Bus routes in NYC serve disproportionately poorer people and senior citizens.

...I should say that the bus re-design is not about favoring bikes, its about speeding up bus travel times. The B65 is one of the worst busses in Brooklyn. It does not need to stop on literally every single block.

You’re not actually working to improve the lives of poor people if you’re not paying your invoices on time.

For full context, NYC relies on a network of community contractors to provide services like Pre-K and other services, but getting a basic invoice paid for by the city is a legendary nightmare often taking 6-12 months. For a small business, especially an MWBE, this doesn't work.

For many years, and many administrations, NYC has lectured us all on "supporting local biz" and "investing in communities" while screwing both by not paying its bills on time. Community-based city contractors literally out here struggling to make payroll bc of this. Unacceptable.

These annual numbers aren’t huge yet but the trend is real, especially as Philly becomes more of a destination for artist and entrepreneurs. New York’s inability to solve affordability is a generational misstep. Literally.

The truth is plain to see for anyone who cares to look. One group gets their status revoked, and then deported to a dangerous country like criminals. The other gets welcome-bags and books on "reverse racism."

….and yes, revoking TPS for political reasons but encouraging immigration from white South Africans because of “genocide” is blatantly racist. Haiti is far more dangerous than SA for those with TPS.

All things considered, the notion that great cities must be completely frozen in ember has been one of the most destructive of our time.
