We found that grazers shape soil carbon cycling by changing the quality of organic matter entering the soil and how microbes break it down. Removing grazers shifts microbial enzyme use towards processing more complex material, potentially reducing microbial carbon use efficiency.

I was supported by a PhD fellowship from the CSIR India at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and a postdoctoral fellowship from the European Research Council (ERC) at Technische Universität Dresden and Ulm University. The open access was funded by Projekt DEAL.

We combined a 14-year grazer-exclusion experiment with laboratory incubations to investigate how large mammalian grazers regulate microbial foraging and their enzyme portfolios in soil.

Join us for the inaugural talk for the GfÖ agroecology Monthly AgroEco Thursday seminar series! Please send me a DM for the Zoom link if you want to join.

✨ Check out AgroEco Thursday taking place on the first Thursday of every month at 2:00 p.m. This is a new monthly webinar series hosted by the AK Agroecology. First speaker this thursday is @catrinwestphal.bsky.social For more information: gfoe.org/en/specialis...

Behind our science are people who make it possible. One home in Kibber welcomed seven PhD journeys, including mine and my supervisor’s. Our hosts are no longer with us. Their quiet contribution to science cannot be quantified. My PhD story would be incomplete without them. tinyurl.com/59a2h3tb

Thank you for the wonderful conversations and for introducing me to the people working behind the scenes. Photo by @jiayunzou.bsky.social

#BIOCOMP Japan A surprising meet-up in Bavarian Forest National Park, Germany. @akkym.bsky.social Thank you to Shiretoko National Park, the scientists and field assistants who made this experiment possible. FYI, Bavarian Forest National Park is also home to one of the #BIOCOMP sites in Germany.

Happy #InternationalMicroorganismDay! 🦠🌍 From soils to forests, tiny organisms have an enormous impact. At #BIOCOMP, we’re celebrating the microbial world and the researchers working to understand it. Here’s to curiosity, collaboration, and discoveries still to come!

Happy International Microorganism Day to everyone studying, teaching, or simply curious about the microbial world! This #InternationalMicroorganismDay, I’m reflecting on a month immersed in microbial ecology. 🦠

Today’s seminar on Forest Microbiomes by @bes-forests.bsky.social, brought me back to forest microbiology, the field I have been working in. From exploring the breadth of microbial ecology to building connections and returning to my own research: a fitting way to celebrate the microbial world.

Deadwood may look quiet, but its microbial communities tell a global story. 🌲🦠 At #ISME20, I’ll present our #BIOCOMP work on how climate and land-use change shape microbial diversity across the world’s forests. 20 Aug | 10–11 a.m. | PS3.22.405, NZICC Come say kia ora!

#BIOCOMP Module 2 is now set up in Spain. Logs are in place, nature takes over, and fresh data is on the horizon. Module 2 examines fungi-insect interactions and their effects on wood decomposition across different climatic zones. P.C. @sebseibold.bsky.social

This year, we started a new experiment as part of BIOCOMP studying interactions between insects and fungi in deadwood, especially vectoring, and their effects on decomposition. The first site in Germany has been set up, and some model insect species have moved into their new homes.

Uncertainty or stochasticity is the norm in fieldwork. Everything can be planned, but nature has its own way. Our natural forest site in Germany was destroyed by a wild boar attack last January. However, thanks to the local foresters, we could replace it quickly, now well protected. #BIOCOMP ISA
