My corner of the web is up to date. Most of my websites are static. Today I see that Synology has updated the affected PHP packages. Of the software I'm self-hosting in docker containers, only two use PHP; FreshRSS and SpeedTestTracker. #PHP2Shell #SmallWeb #SelfHosting #Synology #Updates

Synology users, Synology has released updates to fix the PHP2Shell vulnerabilities. Please upgrade the affected packages! #Synology #PHP #PHP2Shell

Some young people came to my door yesterday to ask me to switch mobile carriers. I told them about archive.org, which they said they'd never heard of! They were back in my neighborhood again today, so I told them about Project Gutenberg, and explained what "public domain" is. www.gutenberg.org

People of California, (and Oregon and Washington!) you can install this earthquake alert app today, and participate in tomorrow's scheduled earthquake drill! I have gotten an alert before I felt shaking. The MyShake ShakeAlert app is free from UC Berkeley myshake.berkeley.edu #Earthquake

There's a new "create a pass" feature in Apple Wallet for iOS 27, and I just used it to add library cards, with barcodes. Here are the instructions from Apple's website for how to create a pass in Wallet. support.apple.com/guide/iphon... The "standard" template works well for library cards.

Today I learned that my local public library serves their website from the library building! 📚🛜💕

Mute Filters A whole bunch of improvements here: - mutes now work across paired profiles - mute keywords, hashtags, and domains - easier to start a mute from the timeline - time limits for all mute types - disable reposts per person

Happy Birthday, Mary Shelley! Born on this day in 1797 🫀

As many mourn the loss of beloved icon and sibling in Christ Dolly Parton, we're revisiting this interview with the Rev. Dr. Theresa Cho and the Rev. Sam Lundquist of St. John's Presbyterian Church where "Dolly Church" is an annual celebration: pcusa.org/news-storyte... #PCUSA #DollyParton #Worship

As a tribute to Dolly, why not donate a book? Leave one is a free library. Give one to a friend or neighbor or child. Buy one for a teacher’s wishlist. If you have book donation ideas, add them to this thread. Dolly would love to see people getting books!

I woke up to my alarm for getting the kids ready for school on Tuesday morning, and sincerely believed it was Saturday. #Blogging #Blaugust

Today, while browsing through the Way Back Machine on Internet Archive, I stumbled upon an old website that I had made. This was almost certainly my first "professional" website, and I believe I made it in the year 2000 when I was sixteen. blog.shannonkay.com/2026/08-1... #OldWeb #Blaugust

Just noticed while visiting a Wordpress blog that #Gravatar has profile pages. I'm updating my gravatar profile page with current links because it shows if I comment on a Wordpress.com blog. Might be an ok "link tree" alternative for some? There's a custom domain option. Interesting.

Happy HTML Day! Maybe you don't have time to write a whole HTML document today. That's ok. Let's write the HTML for a link! Link to your website or any website you want. <a href="https://make.yourownwebsite.org">Make Your Own Website</a> #HTMLDay2026 #HTML #HTMLDay #SmallWeb #Websites

I read that today, August 4, 2026, is the setting of Ray Bradbury's short story, There Will Come Soft Rains. Yes, it is today. > "Today is August 4, 2026," said a second voice from the kitchen ceiling, "in the city of Allendale, California." www.libraryofshortstories.com...

Since people won't stop reposting this, I am forced to join the chorus of people repeating that this entire site is AI-generated

yeah it LOOKS great but in reality it's like 70 degrees all the time and every cafe serves the best coffee you've ever had

Again, I'm testing out @leaflet.pub. The first test was published as a one-off "Looseleaf" document. This time I set up a "Publication". I was happy to try out the custom domain support.

Testing out @leaflet.pub. It's pretty interesting and different from what I was expecting.

My parents are about to throw away an Apple II Plus in the DFW area that was working when last booted in the early 90s. Anyone into retro computers have an idea of how I would match it with an interested hobbyist?

New Kindles now require EPUB3 files via the "Send-to-Kindle" service, causing MOBI usage to decline. However, PG wants to keep supporting readers with older Kindle devices. We are hosting a two-question survey to see if users still need them to provide MOBI files. forms.gle/nU4cREmuxdHA... 2/2

I am still reeling from this incredible gift. Professional model maker Dennis Chan (and husband of the talented @alawinans.bsky.social!) made this INCREDIBLE figurine of my grandparents. I can't stop turning it over in my hands. What a wild thing to see @yasimamura.bsky.social's work in 3D.
