Got rickrolled at a wedding ceremony today. Just to be clear, not at the reception, but at the ceremony itself. Also just to be clear, this is not a complaint.

I’m sorry did my radio station just play a Michelle Branch self-cover of “Game of Love” with the New Radicals? What fucking decade is it?? (Make no mistake I AM NOT COMPLAINING)

I, too, have stopped saying "y'know, like the movie" when introducing matrices, but this inspires me to discuss an "oh no I am so old and they are so young" moment from one of my classes last week. In one of my classes, we start with formal logic and that includes a section on logical arguments.

Right?? But: I used to include a little aside about this film when I introduced matrixes but then the other year a student told me that they "weren't that familiar with classic scifi" which was a 💀 moment for me. Last year by show of hands only two students of ~25 had seen it.

Having done this lesson a few times, I knew enough to start with "How many of you know who John Lennon was?" About 5 of 22 hands. "If I say he was one of the Beatles, does that help?" All but a few hands go up. "Good. So what happens, we have a valid argument, but the conclusion is false."

Now, a valid argument can have a false conclusion if the premises are false. The (somewhat old, college-level) text we use has this as its example: 1. If John Lennon was a rock star, then John Lennon had red hair. 2. John Lennon was a rock star. CONC. John Lennon had red hair.

I hate that I always start reading these and even after my brain is like “wait, this is Jon Bois, this is nonsense”, it still tries to understand the nonsense.

a catch is when a possession consists of at least one football move, unless there is first intent that can clearly be observed. the if the intent is observed concurrently with the possession, the ball carrier must first establish zone in space. zone in space is an acquiescence of one's football self

In the past two weeks, I have attended two stadium concerts for top-tier pop stars, driven hundreds of miles to attend two close friends' wedding and then their reception, gone to Medieval Times, and oh yeah started a new school year with a course I've never taught before. It's time for a nap.

How fucking dare you, brain. How dare you give me a dream where I win $50,000 in a McDonald's promotion and have just enough time to think "wow, I might actually be able to get a house now" and then I wake up.

While reading up on women's European football, I discovered a delightful Danish idiom: "lort eller lagkage", which apparently literally translates to "shit or layer cake".

I’m not sure who’s controlling the playlist at this Jersey Mike’s but in the time it took to eat my sandwich, I’ve heard “miss independent” by ne-yo and “miss independent” by Kelly clarkson (and not consecutively).

There’s a garbage infographic I just saw on Facebook about “how the US could play England on July 4” and people are in the comments saying “not true, use ai to check it!” as if the original post was not obviously ai generated

Fun fact: This picture was taken the last time a FIFA World Cup was played in North America. Fun fact #2: That hat is currently about ten feet away from me.
