Hi from Alberta where I’m a professor at University of Calgary in the dept of earth energy and environment. I’m a physicist turned mgmt consultant turned think tanker now researching the energy transition. I love e-bikes and etrikes. And I’m currently on med leave fighting breast cancer.

In Alberta a big part of the strategy is data centres as "digital refining" to produce value from additional natural gas use (and leverage the cold weather). This is not some kind conspiracy theory but clearly stated on the website describing the data centre strategy www.alberta.ca/datacentres/...

Erik Schlenker-Goodrich@riogranderift.bsky.social

Helpful for a Vice President of the American Gas Association to explain why AI data centers pursue behind-the-meter natural gas-fired power gen. Counters the wishful thinking that renewables & unicorns will blossom everywhere if BAAJA passes. Remember: BAAJA is 💯 based on market assumptions.

if (big if obviously but for many this is the approach) you ignore the pollution/GHG/etc impacts of combusting natural gas it's a completely coherent strategy. Which is why I increasingly think the idea that data centres will net improve climate outcomes by driving renewable growth isn't correct.

A little extra TLC for Moea! 🦦💖 Our rescued sea otter receives PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field) therapy to help manage age-related arthritis. This treatment may help reduce inflammation, improve circulation and support tissue health, helping Moea stay comfortable as she gets older.

I’m not sure if this is just a location thing but the rate of full size or even king size candy bars at Halloween for trick or treating. I keep trying to impress upon my children how this was literally an urban legend when I was a child and it’s totally normal for them 🤯

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

And you know how we got there?? On the back of decades of government funded and directed research. (Yes I am really truly committed to the bit when it comes to supporting industrial policy to the point that I read the whole history of the development of the drug I was given)

chemotherapy and supportive meds for managing nausea and vomiting during treatment.

This is many worlds interpretation slander (niche quantum joke)

Parse out the voters that didn't actually want to separate but wanted to "send a message to Ottawa™️" & the official #Separatism vote number might at best hit 10%. For the record a larger percentage of Americans believe in FAIRIES than Albertans that legitimately want to separate from Canada #abpoli

My unfiltered response to reading the story about this is - science is just fucking awesome sometimes. scitechdaily.com/scientists-e...

scitechdaily.comScientists Engineer “Tumor-Eating” Bacteria That Devour Cancer From Within
SARS‑CoV‑2 (COVID-19)@covid19disease.bsky.social

🚨 BREAKTHROUGH: Canadian scientists at the University of Waterloo Dr. Brian Ingalls, Dr. Sara Sadr, and Dr. Marc Aucoin have engineered “tumor-eating” bacteria that can invade and consume cancerous tumors from within. A potential breakthrough in cancer treatment research.

like seriously: you get a bacteria that likes no oxygen so it can live inside the cancer, but it needs to be able to survive when it gets to the edge, so you make it so it can do that, but then it would run amok before it got to the cancer so you make it turn on that ability ONLY WHEN IT HAS FRIENDS

Okay, people are STiLL iN LiNE at the Lavern polling station, and results can't roll out until everyone there has voted and the station has closed. Alberta politics has somehow levelled up.

Elections Alberts just confiirmed that they don't know if all of their polls are closed so that's why we don't have results. Given our top resource, it's wild how poorly an oiled machine we are.

In my 5th decade I am starting to debate how much politeness I owe (men. It is only men who have done this to me) who show up at an event where I am speaking, raise their hand during question period to give “more of a comment” and proceed to talk about how the sun doesn’t always shine and my 1/

I also think that this is a real thing. There is always going to be some cost to doing it bsky.app/profile/shas...

I think this is part of it. I don’t think a woman can ever do something like this without paying a cost for it. But I’m starting to feel more like both I pay a person cost for not doing it. And that the cost for doing it is one I’m more willing and maybe able to pay.

It’s funny to me (in a totally not at all unique experience but one I know I share with many!) to reflect on how I am evolving back into the childhood version of myself who hadn’t yet learned that I can’t or shouldn’t outright reject nonsense and instead should be patient with it .

It’s not obvious and it deserves to be met with respect. But I increasingly feel like my duty to respond to the former, which is really a version of saying - I will clearly point out this obvious thing that you must have missed because I don’t respect your intelligence - deserves the same amount

Of respect back. Which is to say something like - let me be clear, we obviously take these costs into account because clearly the sun doesn’t always shine. Not to score points but because I don’t owe respect back to someone who treats me, my status, and my knowledge, with such little.

Statement about something to do with solar and wind being affordable/low cost/whatever is wrong because it doesn’t take into account the backup/battery required. I do believe a genuine question like - why is it that you can integrate wind or solar at low costs if it isn’t always there is legit.

The idea that something is now a nonnegotiable because it is widely used is absurd. I am 45. Do you have any idea how much and how often the consumer landscape has changed over the course of my life? Demand, rules, infrastructure—all of these things change.

so many good ideas from people here (now me trying to figure out how im going to fit everything into this class!)

Energy policy friends - I'm working on my course plans for winter term and would love some suggestions. What is your favourite energy policy example (and why? what does it illustrate that you think students should know about energy policy)

Seriously, in a world that seems increasingly disposable it is so satisfying to take care of things and see them last. (if you are in YYC I can highly recommend Jose from theshinedrop.com).

For whoever else needed to hear this (like me) - it’s ok if you don’t want to (or know how) to do the work of caring for you leather boots. You can find a small buisness and have someone do a much better job and end up with shoes that look amazing even though they are 5 or 20(!!?!) years old

Yes Bayern should have played better but why in the world is a ref who was suspended last year by the Bulgarian association reffing a Champions league game?! The decision not to give cards for the early fouls against Kimich and Olise was nonsense.

Just want to share that my new book finally has a title!! *The Secret Life of Science: How research is biased and why we need it anyway* will be published with the Yale University Press trade division It puts many best hits of philosophy of science, feminist epistemology, and STS together...

I feel like we in Alberta are not worried enough about the scheduling issues that will come up Nov 1 after the not time change time change. Its like Y2k but it only impacts a few million people and its not clear who is working on it and we have decimated all our IT departments since then.
