Supper tonight: Roasted sweet potatoes, garlicky salmon, pan-fried mushrooms, and a salad of cucumber, avocado, grapes, granny smith apples, and a super-aged cheddar.

In the ancient Chinese administrative system, 戸部 was one of the six central government departments, responsible for matters such as taxation and state finances. 瘤 means something like a bump, a swelling, or, figuratively, a troublesome obstacle. Both are kind of fitting.

A little fun fact to wrap things up, since name games are a common theme in this franchise: The name “Kobu” has two interesting meanings, depending on which kanji you associate with it.

You can see just how much emphasis is already being placed on technology in the smaller nations. The Land of Rivers has sent Shinobi (on a mission from the daimyo?) to recruit Amado for his technological expertise, since there are no longer enough Shinobi to maintain peace in the nation.

Also from 2020, this column shows just how quickly Scientific Ninja Tools are evolving, and that it's not just Shinobi who benefit from them. On the contrary, it's pretty much everyone.

When the previous chapter mentioned that Shinobis were to be phased out, I was immediately reminded of certain excerpts from this old column, and I found them buried deep within my computer. 2020.

This is something we really need to have explored!

What's interesting about him is that he actually has a positive attitude toward shinobi and admires them. That makes you wonder: What caused this change of heart over the past years? Did Naruto's “death” perhaps cause him to lose all hope in the shinobi system? Or is this all Kobu's planning?

Delightfully, the VA still has explicitly *LGBT* resource posters up, that are using the progress flag. They also looked new. In case you're wondering how things are going with them trying to stamp all that out.

I started a document about my Demon Slayer watch to share with friends who have already enjoyed the series. I'm posing screenshots here for anyone else who is interested.

I've spoken before that my choice to leave twt was influenced in no small part by the amount of election misinformation/disinformation spread there in 2024. This explains why there was such a big West contingent in the anime community now.

NEW: The group behind Cornel West's 2024 ballot push was wholly funded through Elon Musk's dark money network, according to Sludge's review of tax documents. readsludge.com/2026/10/26/m...

No one I knew in real life talked about West, but I couldn't go a day without seeing multiple posts supporting him on twt in the run up to the presidential election.

So if we consider that authors express themselves through their work, it's not much of a reach to imagine that working at Shonen Jump specifically is a part of what is being expressed, given that this guy has spent the better part of his adult life working at Shonen Jump. Which is notoriously hard.

Most of Chainsaw Man's heavy handed social critique fits Japanese society writ large. But this is where the author's background comes into play. Because he was integrated into the adult institutions earlier than most of his peers. Look Back kind of covers this from the opposite angle.

The ultimate credit for Jump's foray into violent, socially negative stories - a wave including MHA and Demon Slayer slightly earlier, and JJK as a contemporary - was them getting their asses kicked by Attack on Titan after passing over it because it was too violent and socially negative.

Chainsaw Man, final analysis: Part 0: Shonen Jump Aesthetic opinions aside, Chainsaw Man remains a defining work of popular fiction in the 20’s. It’s publication was a drastic departure from Jump’s editorial mainstream of the 00’s and 10’s. First, we examine the nature of this divergence.

To summarize: through Denji, Chainsaw Man reckons with the harmful impacts of Shonen Jump on its audience of young men and especially its authors in terms of direct abuse and indoctrination into rape culture, examining by example the way that global institutions do so in general.

These young men are then exploited, first as underpaid assistants, second as overworked mangaka, almost always to bodily harm. It is the best you can do in the industry, but even then it is a bloodbath. Unpopular authors are ruthlessly cut. Most get one chance only. Useless dogs get euthanized.

Through Denji, Chainsaw Man is a reckoning from within the pages of Jump about the ideological impact of the magazine’s editorial standards on its target audience. To me, this much is straightforward to take from the overall storyline. However, I believe it is more personal than that.

Denji is not a hero of Shonen Jump, he is a victim of Shonen Jump. The way Denji’s heart breaks is the way that young men’s pure hearts are twisted by the harmful ideologies of Japanese society that are embedded in Shonen Jump’s editorial guidelines. That’s why he is just like me fr.

Let us consider, now, Jump’s target audience of horny teenage dudes. They encounter Jump’s catalog of heroic cycles featuring redeemable perverts: that is to say, rape culture, but not just rape culture. The heroic cycle has its own ideology.

And in the best examples of Ecchi (don’t hold me on this, I beg you) this is the take away. Shoutout to Rumiko Takahashi the best to ever do it and of course it was a woman. But that’s not what happens to Denji. Because Denji’s pure heart encounters a horrific reality.

Instead of Denji committing crimes against attractive women, he encounters a sequence attractive women who commit a variety of crimes against him, including sexual assault. The normally hidden horror of the archetype is inverted. Ecchi in negative.

What positions Chainsaw Man uniquely within Jump’s catalog is its engagement with politics; not because other stories don’t discuss politics, but because Chainsaw Man examines the politics of the Shonen Jump magazine itself. Specifically, Jump’s editorial standards.
